I stare at Alexia Haufmann, conflicted.
Maybe she deserves a chance. Maybe she knew the dose wouldn’t really kill mom. Maybe she’s brave after all.
Lexie turns to go, taking a step.
“It’s not unforgivable.”
My reply stops her, and she whips back to look at me, all the hope and sadness of the world pooled in those droopy eyes.
“It’s not unforgivable.” I repeat, more sure of myself, however unable I am to bring myself to spare her a smile. “I might never be able to forgive you, but it’s not me you owe forgiveness. It’s mom.”
