A pup’s cry, raw and unhidden. A second voice joined, thin and strained—two little throats overlapping in fear. “Mama—” The sound cracked mid-breath, shredded, and reformed into something the world had no right to hear. The howl came. Not the iron cry of seasoned wolves. Not the broken wail of rogues at the border. This was raw. New. Two voices rose together—bright, fierce, untrained—and the sound went through the pack like a blade. The glass slipped from my hand and shattered at my feet.

The sound that erupts from me is raw, unfiltered, and filled with a torrent of emotions that words alone cannot express. "AAAAHHHH!" The scream tears through my throat, carrying with it the weight of betrayal, hurt, and shattered dreams. It echoes off the walls, a desperate plea for answers and solace that can never truly be granted. The sound resonates, vibrating through every fiber of my being as if trying to purge the pain that threatens to consume me.

When William hurried back to the apartment, the place was pitch black. He called my name twice. No response. In that instant, his heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vice. Alarm bells screamed in his head. He started frantically calling my phone. The first call went to voicemail. The second, the phone was off. By the last attempt, the number was no longer in service. He switched to our chat and sent a string of question marks. None of them delivered. His fingers trembled. He scrolled to the very top of our conversation and finally opened the voice message from three days ago, the one he had never bothered to listen to.

As the door closed behind him, I heard the screeching sound of a car followed by a deafening crash and someone's scream. In that moment, I cried out, "Don't die, Ricky. Please don't leave me alone," my voice echoing through the emptiness. But it was too late. I couldn't stop the tears from streaming down my face, as the reality of his absence settled in. However, my despair was interrupted by a voice calling out to me, "Haze, wake up, Haze."

My heart felt heavy, eyes narrowed in as I tried to grasp the horrifying scene before me, but it was overwhelming, so difficult to understand. Do you hear the cries? The cries of lost souls... begging for your help, praying you'll come out of your shell and fight their enemies." The voice returned, whispering again. I turned to find its source, but all I saw was a wisp of smoke. "Who are you? Where am I? Who are those people screaming in pain?" My voice was shaky, my breath labored. Tears welled in my eyes as I blinked, trying to make sense of it all.

"Maybe it's the strong winds from the recent typhoon. I think I've caught a cold..." Carter nodded, gently taking her hand and leading her toward the cemetery exit. "It's my fault. I knew you weren't feeling well, but I still dragged you out here in this cold wind." I hung back, watching as everyone gathered around Jodie. The sight of her being smothered with concern hit me like a tidal wave, and a deep sadness overtook me. Suddenly, a sharp, brittle snap echoed from the tree nearby. Before I could even react, the massive trunk cracked in two and came crashing down.
