My mouth on Adrian’s. One. Two. Three. Air into his lungs. One. Two. Three. An explosion. Loud. The earth shook. Everything was fuzzy. My chest squeezed, a sob choking my throat. Yet, nothing came out. But I heard the screams piercing my brain. I heard the cries. I tasted the blood. I felt the loss.

And then she heard it. A child’s cry, faint and trembling, carried on the wind. It pierced the silence, freezing Vivi in place. Her heart lurched, and her head whipped toward the sound. “Hello?” she called, her voice cracking with desperation. The cry came again, sharper this time, and she turned toward it instinctively, her legs propelling her forward before her mind could catch up.

This one louder than the first. Then another. And another. The sounds erupt from every direction at once. High-pitched. Gut-wrenching. Inhuman. My blood turns to ice. The screams tear through the forest so violently that for a moment I can hear nothing else. Nothing except the realization that I am alone in this nightmare.

Cosmo gasped “m-my f-friends! My FAMILY!” He scooped up the slopping guts around him and let them splatter to the ground from between his fingers. He threw his head back and wailed. The heartbreaking misery echoed off the blood-soaked walls above him.
