Sniffing, I wipe at my face with the curtain one last time and walk over to my bed, picking up my phone that has already stopped ringing by now. When I swipe at the screen, I see a popped up notification, again from an Unknown number. UNKNOWN NUMBER: You’re already dead, Athena. You just don’t know it yet. My breath catches and I type back furiously with shaking hands. 'Who are you?' But the message doesn't send----- of course it doesn't; you can't send messages to or call unknown numbers because they've been made private or unknown. Sighing I toss my phone back on the bed and flop down as well, burying my face into the pillow and starting a fresh batch of tears.

The city was alive beneath me, but all I could see was her face. Grace. Or Claire. Whatever name she had chosen to hide behind. One month. one goddamn month. She really believed changing her name and moving across the state would erase me from her life. A faint smile tugged at the corner of my lips. She still didn't know me. The door opened again. Two men dragged in a young technician whose face had already gone pale. His knees almost gave out the moment he saw me. Tyler stared at the young technician for several long seconds. The room fell into a suffocating silence.

With that, I ended the call. My phone buzzed again and I picked it up, thinking it was Devon until I saw it was an unknown number. A single text was sent. I opened the message. Unknown: We need to see. That was cryptic. See where exactly. I didn’t want to, but I sent a text to the number. Me: Who are you? It didn’t take long for the person to reply. Unknown: We need to see. My jaw tightened. "We need to see"? See what? See who?

I liked my routines because they were mine. And yet, somehow, none of that ever seemed to count. Inside the house, another burst of laughter erupted, louder this time, infectious. It sounded like it belonged to another version of me. A parallel-universe Ellie who had followed the script more closely. The one who had brought someone home, who fit neatly into the glowing windows and shared jokes and collective warmth. I wondered what she was like. Happier? Or just better at playing the part? I pulled my phone from my pocket, more out of reflex than intention, and checked the screen. Nothing. No new messages. No missed calls. No notifications trying to pull me back into anyone else’s orbit.
