I set up behind the counter in case any customers come in and pull up our social media accounts. I turn the book over a few times in my hand, reading the description. The front cover has a bad ass looking guy on it with long dark hair, huge muscles wearing a shit ton of armor and carrying a huge sword. It looks pretty cool and I'm actually kind of interested in it. I pull out my phone and flip through my contacts until I get to my friend Jack. "What do you want? It's still early." He says as soon as he answers. I huff at him, looking at the clock.

“It’s not a big deal, Kathy! You’ll come back to school after a short break, and with me by your side, nobody on this campus will ever dare say a single word to your face again! I have power here, my family has power, I can protect you!” “I don't want your protection! I want the truth!” I yelled, my vision turning completely red. The frustration inside my brain finally snapped, and I started wildly throwing out names, listing every single person who had ever stepped foot into his life. “Who else could have stolen the file from you, Damon?! Was it Marcus? Did Marcus take your phone while you were drunk?! Was it Leo? Was it one of your idiot fraternity brothers?! Was it Hailey…”

I tell her as little as possible about why I’m back, only that the situation required hands that the board would trust. It’s easy in the way things are easy when both people have already finished the harder version of the story. At the end of it she adjusts the strap of her bag and looks at me directly. “So we’re friends?” I consider the word. Friends feels accurate enough for what remains. Anything more would be dishonest. Anything less would be unnecessarily cold. “Friends,” I say. She nods once, satisfied, and heads in the opposite direction down the hall.
