In an attempt to lighten the heavy atmosphere, I managed a small smile. "Really?" I teased gently. "And here I thought you might be secretly relieved to not have to deal with me anymore."
My mood shifted, and I gently slapped my own forehead in a gesture of self-deprecation. "God, I'm such a bad host," I admitted with a wry smile. "Would you like something, Mr. Capone? Coffee, tea? Alcohol is off-limits tonight, but I can whip up a mean hot chocolate."
