The mark on her chest pulsed faintly through the fabric of her tunic, in time with the distant hum of the Heart. “She’s stabilizing,” I said. “For now.” He didn’t respond. His focus was fixed on the horizon, where the forest met the mountains. I followed his gaze and felt the bottom drop out of my stomach. The Rift wasn’t gone. It hung there with a tear in the air itself, faint but visible, pulsing with dark light. For every Riftborn she’d burned away, two more shadows lingered, crawling at the edges like maggots around a wound. “She sealed the Heart,” I said, “but not the Rift.”

“If Mia wants him to.” The group stood there for several moments, the wind whistling through the canyons. Then Taro looked toward the darkening horizon. “We’re not safe here. That rift’s still alive, and if it flares again—” “Then we hold this ground,” Sybil said sharply. “Until they return.” No one argued. They began to construct a temporary perimeter using crystal stakes forged from the resonance itself—Sybil’s new creation. Each one pulsed with a faint pink glow that formed a barrier around the rift, stabilizing the air.

My leather jacket was barely saving the look. I quickly stripped down to my underwear and my eyes landed on my body through the mirror. I slowly stepped closer to get a better look and I saw a very familiar sight. The bruises from Raul's beating had already formed into a purple and yellow explosion all over my ribs. With it, scars, horrid scars. There were some slashes, stab wounds, carvings, and belt marks. Raul. I quickly shook off my gaze and practically ran away from the mirror. I swallowed down a pain killer before slipping into black jeans, a black turtle neck, and some jewelry.

Candi stated with repulse adjusting herself on Tyler’s laps. “Ty already got some with the tomboy, trouble in paradise already?” Shane said wiggling his eyebrow “i bet she couldn't get enough and she just have to crawl begging back,” one of the boys commented, the whole table erupted into laughter and what was left of the courage I built up shattered immediately. Clover, one of the players-who is also a jerk-sitting at the edge of the table, then stretched his legs forward when a boy was passing with his lunch tray and the content landed on my body as the boy tripped.

If we stabilize these key points, the smaller fractures should collapse on their own.” Jamie peered over his shoulder, his brow furrowing. “That’s still a lot of ground to cover.” “It is,” Callan said, their tone calm but firm. “But it is achievable. Together.” Emma studied the map, her resolve hardening. “Then we start here.” She pointed to a point glowing brighter than the others, located deep within the Whispering Valley. “This one’s the most unstable. If we don’t act quickly, it could rupture again.” Vivienne pushed off the mantel, stretching her arms. “The Whispering Valley, huh? Sounds... ominous. Let’s hope it’s just a name.”
