A shimmer of moonlight on steel. Elira’s dagger was in her hand instantly. “We’re not alone.” Figures emerged from the shadows—tall, cloaked, their eyes glinting like stars. Their movements were silent, precise, deadly. Elves. One stepped forward, lowering his hood. His hair was gold as wheat, his features sharp and cold. His gaze swept over Kaelen before settling on Elira. “Liraethiel,” he said, voice like steel wrapped in velvet. “You’ve broken exile.”

The ink on the book’s pages twisted, spinning like a tiny whirlpool. Then, out of the black ink, a single drop of gold floated up. It hung in the air, letting out a high, awful scream. “That’s him!” Gabe shouted. “That’s the soul of the Auditor!” The gold drop didn’t run. It stretched and grew into the shape of a tiny child, all gold. It looked just like any child, except its eyes were spinning clock faces.

The ancient gold in my hand was anathema to the demon. Silas Vane stood over him, his spear lifted, ready to drive the point through the back of Eldrick’s neck. "Silas!" I shouted, my voice carrying the full, resonant weight of a true Luna command, a sound that hadn't been heard in this valley for ten years. He continued to talk and laugh with the pillow-like I was invisible, I took in a deep breath then released it. "Hey!" I called loudly. He turned and looked at me then pointed at the pillow. "Can't you see that I'm talking to my mother?" he asked seriously then laughed. A cold shiver spread throughout my body the second he got serious, something about his voice got my attention, not that his voice was bad, no it wasn't, it was actually deep and husky, if it was on the radio I would have fallen for his voice without a second thought.

The angry growls coming from them was enough to cause every nearby person to crouch down into themselves. “Dammit,” Dillan practically shouted before he lowered his voice again. “We were only two years away from graduating and becoming eligible for missions. This is bullshit, how are we supposed to make a name for ourselves if the war is over before we get a chance to fight.” They continue to bicker for a while before George changes the subject. “Did the Silver Myst make an appearance?” I had to struggle to suppress a laugh.
