The light exploded outward and we all shielded our eyes. When we could see again there was something standing in the portal, a figure made of pure light in the shape of a massive wolf. "I am the Watcher," the figure said. "And I'm here to judge whether you deserve the power you've claimed." Anna stepped forward bravely despite her fear. "Then judge me." The Watcher's eyes blazed. "The trial begins now."

Not the Watcher. Something far older. Something history itself had forgotten. 🌑

Then, “Flaw probability acknowledged.” I almost smiled. Because there it was. The crack. Not weakness but possibility. “Then allow me to offer context,” I said. Careful yet measured. “I have observed your system.” Not entirely true. But close enough. “I have observed the Watchers.” That part was undeniable. “And I have observed the Haven.” The patterns shifted again and became focused. Good. Now it was listening. “The Watchers enforce stability,” I said. “Through control.” No response. Agreement implied.

But nights like this, the static crept back in. I stood up, legs shaky, and padded to the counter. Swallowed one of each with the last of my cold tea. The pills scraped down my throat. " One of the Watchers spoke. He had a large projector on and was about to play something for the others. " Show us! " the ones in the audience urged him on. He turned the screen so they could have a better view. " A forward short clip, " He began, " A student was caught displaying powers that are identical to those aliens we have been dealing with. "

But far below, in the hidden depths beneath fracture and frost, the Watcher adjusted its rhythm. And waited.
