# Bonus Chapter 19: What She Built Valentina had a habit. Had it for years, since the first store, since the nights when the kids were finally asleep and Duke was at the garage and the house was quiet in that particular way that felt like held breath. She went to the bookstore. Not to work. Not to restock or plan or review numbers. Just to be in it. Alone. In the building she'd built from nothing. Tonight was one of those nights. Third location. The biggest one. She let herself in through the back, didn't turn on the main lights. Just the low ones—the warm kind she'd installed along the floor, meant to stay on through the night.

A wolf was a patient thing, but it was never asleep. She slipped her hands into her pockets as she crossed the quiet street leading out of downtown. Behind her, neon signs flickered through the fog—Open 24 Hours, Psychic Readings, Best Dumplings in the City. Ahead, the glow faded into darkness. A single streetlight buzzed above a cracked bike path, and beyond that: the forest. A black smudge at the city's edge, older than all its buildings, stubborn as bone. Most nights, Charlie shifted in her apartment or the warehouse she rented near the docks. But tonight something tugged at her—an instinctual itch beneath her ribs. A direction. A pull.

“You want me to allow strange men to feel me up? What if they go to far? What if they’re, you know, ugly or gross.” Holly grinned, opening the door for Valerie. “From what I’ve heard about you from Damien and Nick, you don’t have a ‘too far’.” She shrugged, gesturing for Valerie to enter the bar. “I guess we’ll see how true that is tonight.” Valerie sighed, her nerves tightening into a Christmas ball of lights as she passed Holly and stepped into the rustic looking bar. This night had definitely taken a turn for the twisted and not one she was eager to explore.

I flip the lamp switch on and I glimpse at the alarm clock, “This can't be. What is the probability that this is also a coincidence?” It's 2:00 AM again. I woke up at exactly 2:00 AM the previous night after having a nightmare about the old lady, and today I woke up at the exact time as yesterday after having a nightmare about the same old.
