Maybe I was imagining it, but the library suddenly felt at least ten degrees warmer. I focused my attention back on the books in front of me, now that Cole had added a few. I could feel his gaze still on me, but I tried to ignore it as best as possible. Then I turned a page and the book really did grab my entire attention. On the pages I found a record of all the packs of the werewolves, not just the Grandmoon Pack. I turned the page, hoping to find some record of the Western Pack. Sure enough, there was indeed a record of the western pack, but it was just a few sentences.

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

We chose a fantasy book, involving werewolves and elves, that was set in Oregon; the name of the book was Raised by My Alpha. We were required to state five facts about the setting, provide pictures and activities and two interesting facts, along with anything else we wanted. This was simple and we finished the assignment way before it was time to go. Jason drew an amazing picture of werewolves and elves surrounded by twinkling lights; I was astonished by his artistic capabilities. The picture was so beautiful. After he was finished, I colored it and turned the brochure in to Mrs. Willow; she gave me a small smile and a pat on my hand.

As I glanced around the library, my fingers traced the spine of each book my hands touched. "Help me, Teresa," "With what? What book?" "A book about the West," "Well if it's about the West. What better way to know about it other than from a person who lives there? I'm a Westerner," I shook my head. "No, you don't understand," "What do I don't understand? You're being difficult, Amethyst," I came to a sudden halt, causing Teresa to nearly bump into me from behind. "I'm discussing a narrative from a distinct viewpoint—a perspective recounting tales from the West, not your own," I clarified.
