When I Metcha In The Summer Novels & Stories

VANESSA I’m a summer girl. While I appreciate that we get the full range of seasons here in Colorado, summer is my absolute favorite; long days filled with soaking up the heat of the sun, deepening my tan, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Not even my favorite season can lift me out of this funk, though. Summer is at its peak, and I haven’t set foot outside of the packhouse in days. I’ve been avoiding the outside world, drowning myself in my own sorrow and Vienna’s experimental cocktails, always delivered with a kind word and a smile.

Half the world was asleep, except for a few—including mean looking stray cats that appeared out of the thin air— probably in unfortunate situations like mine even though I was sure I was the most unlucky at the moment. I haven’t complained once, though, because she is doing this for me, and I appreciate it too much to huff and puff about it. I wonder if my mother will remember Arya. There is a good chance because, after the last summer at the cabin, I was miserable for weeks after it because I didn’t know when I would see my crush again. I couldn’t help but smile at the memories of the summer I spent with Arya. They were probably the best days of my childhood, and now she is mine. The world really is a funny thing at times. I just hope this weekend doesn’t change things between Arya and me because she will probably see a different side of me when I am around my family, especially my cousin and my ex.

I told her as I grabbed my keys from my table then walked out with my arms wrapped around her waist. We got into the car and started our journey. The drive to the party arena was quiet except for the low radio. This was quite unusual because Veronica was a chatterbox. I turned to look at her as I drove. Her head was tipped back on the headrest and her eyes were closed. Her fingers strummed to the beat of the music on her lap. I got to the venue and waved her goodbye as she got out of the car. I watched her walk inside before I drove out. I sat on my study desk when I got back trying to read but my mind kept drifting to Veronica. I sighed wearily, closed my textbook and fell asleep.

Just as long as they don't hit the right chords, I'd be fine; ecstatic even. But then again, too much won't be good, and I have proof of that. My Aunt decided to set me up with Matt. And Allen, the ever generous alien, had called the person mentioned immediately, telling him that the gang planned to meet at Bob's Café in Lacson Street by four in the afternoon. So basically, despite my outward protest and insistence that I couldn't meet up with him, I had no other choice. At precisely 4, I was fairly seated outside Bob's Café, defying my Aunt's insistence that I should stay inside to not ruin my powder-y face with sweat.

She looked up, caught me smiling, and smiled. That was it. That was the moment I was done for. Twenty one years old and this is what my life had become. Locked in my room on the first week of summer, curtains drawn, laptop open, completely feral over a woman I could never have. Dad was at work. Laura was somewhere in the house being loud about it. And Nicole was always the problem.

I wonder if she knows they are both in love with her. “It's going to be a good summer,” I try to diffuse things and let Mimi breathe because Max won’t stop complaining to her. “Yeah, a long one too. When I am back, I will be so different. More badass,” Max Snickers and I agree. She will be. I can only imagine what my summer is going to be like. But I have a clue, as my eyes find a pair of silver ones that are heated and trained on me. Yeah. It's going to be a long, hot summer.

Why had he left me like this, shaken, almost breathless? Summer appeared beside me moments later, her curious smile lighting up her face as she nudged me with her elbow. “Hey, who was that?” she asked, her voice brimming with excitement. “You two looked… I don’t know, like, connected. There was some chemistry there, Annie. Don’t tell me you didn’t feel it!”
