“We should tidy up this place and clean her. Papa and our brothers should be back home any moment now.” The other two nodded quickly in agreement. Ina was already reaching down to pull me from the floor when a sudden ringing cut through the room. All three of them stiffened. Uri turned slowly, tracing the sound with her eyes. She began to move, tiptoeing toward the dining table. The ringing continued, muffled but insistent. She knelt, peered under the table, and reached out her hand. Her fingers closed around her phone. She pulled it out and stared at the screen in disbelief. Then she looked up sharply at Iris and Ina, who were already staring back at her, their faces going pale.

“You’ve earned the right.” His hands moved gently down her back, grounding her as she trembled in his arms. Rebecca stood with her hands pressed to her mouth, barely breathing. Luna Valeria’s eyes had gone glassy, but she didn’t interrupt. Then Riley’s phone rang and she flinched, fumbling to pull it from her pocket. She answered without even looking at the screen. “Hello? Now is not...” she started, her voice low. Then she paused, stiffened. Her phone slipped from her suddenly nerveless fingers, clattering to the floor.

The answer should have alarmed me, but in my current state, I couldn't quite grasp why that might be problematic. I was about to respond when a ringing sound interrupted me, cutting through the fog in my brain. "What's that noise?" I looked around in confusion. "It's your phone," he said. I stared at him with furrowed eyebrows and drooping eyelids. My expression was probably comical in its confusion. "Where?" He pointed to the bag on my lap with obvious impatience. It took me several long seconds to realize that my phone was indeed ringing. I fumbled through my bag, knocking over my lipstick and wallet in the process. When I finally managed to pull out my phone, I had to squint at the screen

"That's the spirit. Don't let any man dampen your groove. But first, before I conclude matters, let me call him." I take my phone and dial his number, my heart beating fast in my chest as I wait for him to pick me up. After the third ring, he picks up. I sigh in relief, but he is quiet. What I hear in the background makes my hand freeze as I drop the phone on the bed.

"I can’t fail them. Not again." "You won’t," I said, stepping toward him, my voice softer now. "But you need to act now. You’re not alone in this, Hollis. You’ve never been alone." His eyes softened, just for a moment. But the sound of his phone ringing broke the fragile silence between us. His hands were shaking as he reached for the phone, and I watched him as his face drained of color with each passing second. I saw the screen. Unknown Number. My heart skipped a beat.

“Almost…got it!” The phone appeared in his chained hands. One bar of signal. “Call for help,” I whispered. Nick’s fingers flew over the keypad. Just as he hit send— The phone rang. My heart stopped at the noise. That stupid phone—might as well have set off an alarm. Then footsteps on the stairs. Here they came.

I hear the ringing coming from the alley. I stand still for a moment, my heart racing, unsure of what to do. But curiosity pulls me forward, and I step cautiously into the alley. The air feels colder now, heavier. The sound of my footsteps echoes against the walls as I move deeper into the shadows. I stop when I see it. Richard’s phone, lying on the ground, face up and still glowing. A chill runs through me, and I kneel down to grab it, but something catches my eye—there’s something else there, close to the phone.
