The sound of music plays over the kitchen speakers, drowning out the din of preparations in the dining area. We’ve been at it for hours, but each of us is too excited to stop anytime soon. With each successful practice dish, it’s like we get another wave of adrenaline pushing us forward. At one point, though, something unexpected happens. Anton’s phone rings, and he glances at the caller ID with a puzzled expression before answering it. “Hello?” There’s a pause, and then it happens. His eyes go wide, and without another word, he’s slipping out the back door into the alley, his voice fading before I can make out anything that he’s saying.

Then my phone rings once more. “Hello?” “Step out now!” His voice comes out sharp from the phone , almost deafening my eardrums. Why the hell was he shouting? What’s happening outside?

But before the silence could settle— A phone rang. Not his. Not mine. From inside the apartment. The sound echoed from the kitchen. We froze. Dylan’s eyes met mine. “That’s not possible,” he murmured. The ringing continued. Slow. Relentless. My stomach twisted. “They’re already in,” I said softly. He stepped away from the door and moved toward the sound, his hand never leaving mine. I followed without thinking, our fingers intertwined, breath synchronized, adrenaline sharpening every sensation.

She grabs the phone from her aunt's hand, feeling a mix of fear and confusion. Hurrying out of the house, Rose clutches the phone tightly, her gaze fixated on it. Her heart pounds in her chest as the phone begins to ring persistently. Each ring sends a jolt of anticipation and anxiety through her. I stared at Preston and he wasn't ready to stop, but he pulled out, and left to get it. He returned and handed it over —Rafael’s name flashing. Preston held me, continuing from where he stopped. I smile against Preston’s throat and let the call die. He has until sunset. I’m busy collecting interest.

Suddenly a loud ringing sound cut through the air. I jumped in my seat. Rita gasped loudly. Flinched backward. It was her phone. The phone on the table was ringing loudly. We both stared down at it. The screen lit up brightly. The caller ID didn't show a saved name. It didn't show a city or country code. It was a long string of random numbers. Rita stared frozen at the screen. She stopped crying. She stopped breathing. The restaurant, around us seemed to freeze in time. "Who is that?" I asked. My voice was a whisper.
