“Wind, air, and magic,” I continue, my voice steady, “rise upon this dark creature and reveal its true nature.”
The ground at my feet stirs, and then the wind answers, sharp and sudden, sweeping up dirt and dry leaves in wild spirals. A small tornado forms, whipping through the clearing with a howling shriek. It spins tighter, faster, charging straight toward the dog.
Light gathers in my palms—pure, blinding white—and shoots out in a beam that slams into the twisting wind. It lifts the dog off the ground like a broken doll.
