The corridors of this place went on longer than made sense, turning into other corridors, opening into rooms I had not seen yet, and I let my feet carry me without any particular destination. Then I saw the light. One door at the end of a long hall, slightly open, warm light coming through the gap, and I pushed it and stepped inside. It was a library. Floor to ceiling shelves running the full length of every wall, books packed tightly in rows that disappeared into the upper shadows, a reading chair by the far window and a low lamp casting a circle of yellow light across the nearest shelves and the small table beside the chair. I exhaled for what felt like the first time all night.

But Justin came to the door and he looked straight at me before he looked around the rest of the room. “Lights out.” He said, flipping the switch. So I sat there for a moment with the book in my hand but I was staring at the door. Ben was laying on his back facing the ceiling and I looked back at the book so I could mark the page where I had finished it. But something weird was happening with my eyes. When I looked down at the book in the darkened room, I could still see the words on the page. I pulled the book away from my eyes and I blinked a couple of times before I brought the book back up and I could still see the writing on the pages.
