It wasn't the clear, brilliant diamond Julian had used to 'mark' me as his property. This was a **Black Diamond**—a raw, jagged, five-carat stone that seemed to swallow the light of the hallway. It was surrounded by a halo of small, blood-red rubies that looked like droplets of frozen fire. I hesitated, my hand hovering in the air. The sheer weight of what this represented—a contract that bound my life to the most dangerous man in the city—suddenly felt very real.
