It's harder now, curse that mead, but I try all the same. I hear it again, farther and familiar, from the direction of Citadell, down the creek.

I was damping my hands before tapping my face lightly with water. I hope this wakes me up. “Get your shit together, Lianna!” I whispered to myself. I turned the faucet off and that was when silence enveloped the bathroom. Something crawled within my skin. I didn’t realize I was all alone in the restroom! With fear and slight annoyance, I quickly walked out of the bathroom with my heart beating loudly. I was so fucking scared, alright! “Fuck,” I cursed. “What the hell was that?” I held my chest tightly, hoping a single hand of mine would at least calm the beating. But it didn’t work, my heart was hammering through my ribs and it was amplifying through my whole system.

His voice joins in, a hum that misses every note. Fucking crazy is what it makes me feel. “Could you lower it a bit?” I say. Aim for calm. Miss by miles. “What?” “The music. Can you turn it down? I’m trying to concentrate.” It gets turned down by him. Just a little bit. The humming goes on anyway. Teeth clench tight. Thoughts scatter every way. Nothing holds still. “Amon. Please. I need quiet.” “I turned it down.” “Not enough. And you’re still humming.”

He seems as surprised by it as I am. I sigh. Hard. “Fine,” I say. “Once. Because you said the magic word.” I put my fingers back on the keys. Play the progression again. Slower this time. Letting the chords ring a little longer. And then I sing. *You built your walls from bargains / every stone a quiet debt / you lined the halls with echoes / of the things you can’t forget…* My voice is low, raspy from the day, but it fits.
