Without thinking, I grabbed his arm, pulling him away from the fight.
“We have to go,” I urged, my voice trembling with urgency. He hesitated for a moment, glazing back at his men, but then nodded.
We ran, weaving through the chaos, dodging blows and bodies. The forest loomed ahead, a dark, beckoning sanctuary. My lungs burned, my legs ached, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t stop.
Finally, we plunged into the woods, the sounds of battle fading behind us. We kept running, deeper into the trees, until we were sure we were safe. Only then did we collapse, gasping for breath, the adrenaline slowly draining away.
