He nodded once, like a silent command: Don’t screw this up. I closed my eyes, willing the change to happen. Any second now. Except… nothing happened. No vibration. No spark. Just the pounding of my heart echoing in my ears. Minutes dragged on like hours. Cold sweat slid down my spine as whispers rippled through the crowd. I still hadn’t shifted. Did I… fail?

He’s adapting rather well surprisingly, though I’m sure not being allowed to shift is making him and his wolf antsy. It’s a rare thing for an Alpha to command a pack member to not shift, for some it’s described as feeling like bugs crawling under your skin. Many of us can go long periods without shifting, but for some reason being denied the chance to shift bothers us physically. It’s not painful, just uncomfortable.

So I start to undress. "Finally someone wants to see me," Crystal said. Her voice was neither happy nor cold. I knew she wasn't happy with me ignoring her all the while. I didn't say a word, I just focused on undressing. I then start to shift. "Damn" I swore, groaning in pain. "Why is it still painful?" I asked. The pain of shifting shouldn't be more than once and now I'm still experiencing it. "When you haven't shifted in years. It's just like you just shifting" Crystal replied.

Each time I want to shift, but I don’t. I don’t know if Silas and his pack are relieved that I don’t or worried. I keep trying each night as the warriors fight for their lives, but nothing happens. It’s infuriating. I don’t even shift when Silas is attacked and the next morning, I can see people staring at me. “What am I doing wrong?” I pace back and forth in Silas’s office and he sighs.

I asked Ryan when he came into the bathroom as I brushed my teeth. "Yeah I think we have a bigger problem." "What ?" I frowned "I can't shift." "I don't understand." I said sounding very confused "I thought it was just because I was hungover and then able I tried hard but then I was unable to shift and I thought maybe I wasn't in the right state of mind but now I am fully focused and I still can't shift." He explained "That's very strange. I spit into the sink rinse my mouth and my brush," I'll try" i said.

She returned, and I sighed heavily. "Amy, should I let you in on a little secret?" I asked after pulling out of the hug. She cleaned her misty eyes while nodding quickly. I smiled, "Ever wondered why I don't go for a morning run alongside other members of the pack?" She shook her head, her brows furrowed, “Well, that's because I couldn't shift properly and didn't want to embarrass myself in front of the whole pack. Only Papa knew about my inability to shift, and we've kept it a secret since then?" I revealed.

“Eva, come with me, let’s take you into a room so we can talk privately.” I notice that she’s tentative, nervous, which makes me a bit nervous. I’m not sure why she’d be nervous, unless she’s injured, and I missed it and she’s come to tell me. When we get to the room, I gesture for her to sit and then I sit across from her. “What can I help you with?” I ask her. “I can’t shift,” she whispers, looking down at the floor. I immediately go into doctor mode, thinking through all the reasons why someone can’t shift.
