She has risen from the ashes, literally, and is burning so hot she scorches the ground beneath her.

“Come, Phoenix there is more to see in this pantheon.” As before, the forest faded and gave way to a rocky deserted land. The sun was hot and scorching on Phoenix’s skin. She hugged her arms to her chest to soothe the burn of the sun. Goyre waved her hand over Phoenix’s head and created a shield to cover her from the sun. “What is this place?”

Now normally those would be fighting words, but again, this pregnancy had Phoenix so chill that she just dismissed him and kept on until she was satisfied that everything was just so. Gael noticed that the weather had picked up, meaning the wind had increased, and the moisture in the air, so thick, signifying that a heavy rain was coming; and he frowned thinking that it may put a damper on the festivities, but this was an indoor party so Phoenix was unconcerned that the party would be ruined. The most that would happen is that people would get a little wet going into the venue.

Red Phoenix quickly dropped down to the ground before leaning in to listen carefully. She stood up after a few seconds and wore the most serious expression she ever had. “It seems to be an earthquake,” she declared. “Are the tremors coming from the ground?” With that, Chasing Wind was also about to get down on the ground. His shoulder was suddenly grabbed by Red Phoenix. She dragged him four or five steps backward. The two were terrified when they saw the scene ahead of them. They noticed a bright white light shooting up from the hillside. It was followed by a figure who appeared to be flying out of the hill and reaching the top of the tower in the blink of an eye.

If there was any chance of rain, or if the wind was too strong, the balloon would be grounded, and they’d have to hope for better luck the next day. Parker opened the app. No indication of rain today, and the wind speed was currently only three miles per hour. That was good. But it could also change quickly. Parker shook his head. He didn’t know why he was being so negative. He’d never had any issues with this particular festival. There were some places where you never knew if you’d made the trip just to hang out in a hotel room for two days, but this one had always been consistent. “Hey, how’d you sleep?” someone said, right before an arm went around Parker’s neck.

There was nothing but the hum of crickets and the faint rustle of the wind. She exhaled deeply, closed the window, and dusted off her worn-out mattress. Lying down, she tried to relax, but sleep wouldn’t come. Her mind wouldn’t stop spinning, wandering between thoughts of Blaze, her quiet neighbor, and… Phoenix. Phoenix. Even the thought of his name sent a sharp pang through her chest. Why was life so cruel? Why was it that the people you loved, the ones you trusted most, were the very same ones who could hurt you so deeply?

All it got her was his cold shoulder and his growing impatience, and then even more tenderness toward Florence. As if her pain was proof she was childish and worthless. Now, she was going to leave soon. The visa approval would come soon. None of this mattered anymore. Even arguing with him in the final moments felt pointless. The crowd pressed in as the photographer called for everyone to look at the camera. Boom! A deep, terrifying blast tore open above them. The crystal chandelier shook violently, then turned dark. The whole banquet hall started to shake. "Aaaah!" Screams, sobs, and the crashing sounds of falling objects swallowed everything around them in an instant.

The sound shattered what remained of the pack house windows and carried across Phoenix. A mate's lament. A promise made. A countdown begun. Dawn was only three hours away.
