My words did nothing but enrage him further, and he started to run towards me, hands outstretched ready to place them around my neck. But, before he could reach me, the familiar sounds of large wings flapping in the air met my ears. Fallon and I both looked up, Thale’s red dragon suspended above us. He exhaled flames in Fallon’s direction, although missing him so as to make sure I was not caught in the cross-fire. I needed to get further away.

Alex asked huskily, making me shiver in some unknown desires. "No..nothing." I stammered. Huh! What happened to me? Now why am I stammering? God! I wanna crawl under earth. "By any chance, is she having some kinky thoughts while teasing me?" Alex asked in his sexy voice, turning my ears red in colour. "Gosh! Stop it Alex! You're taking these teasings to the next level!" I exclaimed while fanning my face that's currently feeling hot with his comments. "Your word is an order, your highness!" Alex exclaimed, making me laugh out loud.

Now that I was moving farther away from Vex my fear was quickly turning into anger. I allowed the anger to flow through me. The luxurious, pristine white manor was now shrouded in thick smoke as it was engulfed by flames. I threw away the key, tore off the necklace around my neck, and threw it into the fire. Then, listening to the roaring flames behind me, I left the villa where I had grown up. I thought, 'Atlas, let's never meet again.'

I didn’t think that Uriel was capable of such an emotion, but there it was, matching my own. The bond had already begun weaving the threads of our souls together so quickly that she had pulled part of the fire from me. My wings came out of my body quicker than I realized what was happening, ash fell from my wings and onto the carpet beneath the smoke of my father. Mother growled from her seat in my father’s lap.

I can’t breathe.” She stepped even closer, ignoring the heat that tried to push her back. “Let me anchor you. Just look at me.” He lifted his hand but the dark flame jumped from his palm like a living thing. It arched into the air and split open in the shape of wings made of fire. They stretched wide behind him, crackling with heat so intense the air rippled.

She scoffed and rolled her eyes. "You've been with me, do you not think that I am a beast in bed?" I asked, and stepped closer, breath on hers, "I wouldn't call you a beast," she said as I watched her eyes glaze over at the memory of our intimacy. "What would you call me then," I said, her eyes focused on my lips, and mine darting to hers. "What would you like to be called?" Her voice was husky and before I could reply, giant wings flapped in front of us, extinguishing the fire, its light and warmth gone.

"I would never let you die." Hope whispered to me. Then she let go of me and stood beside me with a corner smile, confident, she made a simple motion with her hand and that reddish shape spread further, like wings, but not just any wings, they were Dragon wings. As the wings passed through the shadows and places a bluish flame appeared and began to burn everything that wasn't solid. I could tell the shadows were writhing and screaming, they were screams of agony as they were consumed, the runes of protection disappeared and the magic that was in the place dissipated, but these flames didn't hit us, it was as if the people who were with me were immune to them.

I hadn’t understood what she meant until now. Maybe she knew. Maybe the fire was never meant to destroy me. The moon slides out from behind the clouds. For a second, the ashes around me glow faintly, stirred by a soft gust. They spiral upward, forming the faint outline of wings. Phoenix wings. I blink, and they’re gone. The world feels too still. Too empty. No guards. No scent of wolves. They must have thought there was nothing left to find. No one survives a fire like that. I crawled towards the river. The reflection that greets me isn’t mine.
