I arranged the black beads, deep blue stones, silver spacers, alphabet cubes, elastic strings, and velvet pouch in front of me, then began the careful process of threading them together. I wanted matching bracelets, one for him and one for me, simple but intimate, elegant but deeply personal, each one carrying the other’s name. It sounded straightforward in theory, but in practice the beads slipped, the string twisted, and more than once I had to start over because my fingers were apparently less graceful than my imagination.
