My eyes were fixated on the witch at the top of the stairs thinking of all the ways I could kill her. 'Her blood will taste amazing,' Cinnabar was huffing and pacing in my mind. The specific quiet of someone arriving at an answer they were hoping would be different. “A skin walker,” she said. “Like the one who wore Marta’s face this morning. The network had more than one. The one who wore Marta’s face was Marcus’s asset. This one is older. More practiced.” She held my gaze. “The kind of practiced that comes from doing something for a very long time under the direction of someone who needed a specific capability and invested in developing it.”

Dax promised, his eyes darkening to a shade of black that matched the midnight sky. The door to the room suddenly rattled. "Dax! Dutch is calling for the riders!" Reaper's voice shouted from the hall. "The Ravagers are at the gates. It's time." Dax looked at me one last time.
