Applause filled the hall. The guests stepped back, making way. Holding a bottle of champagne, I walked slowly toward the round stage, but halfway there, Nico grabbed my arm. “Lena, do you know what kind of occasion this is? You dare cause trouble? Get out! If you anger Don Vincent and his wife and ruin my plans, I won’t spare you!” His grip was tight. In a gown, I couldn’t easily break free. At that moment, a hand wrapped around my waist and pulled me steadily into an embrace.

Isaac’s hand was warm and firm, a friendly grasp. Price hardly closed his fingers around mine, like he would’ve rather kept his skin from touching anything.
