Saw one where it had phoenix feathers along its spine, so it wasn't just fire-breathing but could burn and rebirth from ashes, which messed beautifully with its pack hierarchy. The author used the phoenix trait to explore leadership cycles in the group. Another blended in kelpie traits for a water-based variant; the creature had the dragon's territorial greed but the kelpie's lure-and-drown instinct, making it this terrifying lake guardian. They often use the extra traits to solve a narrative problem, like needing the creature to communicate via psychic bonds from a sphinx or to have a venomous stinger from a manticore for a specific battle. It's less about piling on cool features and more about making the hybrid's internal conflicts and external role in the world more complex.

What I notice is the balance. A pure wolf-dragon is already a clash of social vs. solitary, earthbound vs. sky-bound. Adding a third element, like a trickster fox spirit or a stoic stone golem, tilts that balance. The best blends make the creature's behavior unpredictable but still coherent. You get this sense that the author is playing with archetypes, seeing how far they can warp them before the creature becomes a mess. Sometimes it doesn't work—feels like a buffet plate of powers. But when it does, the creature stops being a mere monster and becomes a walking metaphor for the story's themes, like inherited sin or cultural fusion.
