Amara's POV The sky had just begun its nightly transformation, bleeding from a vivid sapphire into a smoldering tapestry of gold, orange, and fiery crimson. The usual evening sounds of the pack settling in—the distant barks of pups, the low hum of conversation from the kitchens—were suddenly obliterated by a sharp, acrid scent that assaulted my senses. Smoke. Metal. And something else, something sharp and sour, a distinctly metallic tang that made my wolf, usually calm and centered within me, lift her head, her hackles rising, and emit a low, guttural growl deep in my chest. It was a scent of disruption, of ancient, unsettling malice.

Ash coughed as the smoke entered his nostrils. Fuck! “Get out of here. We will go after Tyler.” I told him, and he ran away from the smoke as fast as possible. I just hoped that Stephan was safe. I couldn’t see or smell Tyler anymore. The smoke was veiling everything. So this was his tactic. I smirked. He was stupid if he thought that this could stop my trained warriors. I turned to my left and heard loud snarls and growls of wolves who were charging towards Tyler’s army without letting the smoke stop them.

They looked down on him with killer glares. It must have been his demise if not for the fire that suddenly flared up. He hit the target. Generous smoke floated up from the dancing flames. A startling screech of an alarm bell rang out followed by water bursting out from the mechanical smoke detectors sighted on the ceilings. The wolves suddenly wailed in agony. They were soaked with the water raining down on them. Fumes emitted from their bodies and they cringed down in excruciating pain. The water was poisoned with powdered wolfbane.

She rolled her eyes playfully. I cleared my throat, relaxing back on the bed. “I'd tell one of my pack to get it right away,” I answered then added. “From one of the cars.” We always make sure we have gas mask on anytime we are going outside the pack. The reason being, enemies might be lurking around the woods and might want to attack us with wolfsbane. But only that, it wouldn't be just any wolfsbane, this would be some kind of wolfsbane that had been processed with chemical, and now turned into smoke. When inhaled by any wolf, it weakens such wolf and lead to loss of strength.

“I don’t know, but it’s not from the fire. This is something else.” Jake glanced at him. “You dragged me back here for this?” Loren shook his head. “No. Keep going. It’s just ahead.” They pushed forward, stepping over fallen branches and scorched earth. The deeper they went, the worse the smoke became. “Loren, if you don’t tell me what we’re looking for—” “There.” Jake followed Loren’s gaze and froze. A shift rippled through Jake, his wolf stirring violently. His body tensed, every muscle locking into place. The scent in the air—beneath the smoke, beneath the fire—was something he knew.

Gabriel snarled, pinning the man against the wall. The rogue just smiled behind his gas mask and hit a button on a device strapped to his wrist. The canister on Elena's door hissed. Purple-gray smoke began pouring into the hallway, concentrated wolfsbane vapor, enough to incapacitate or kill any werewolf who breathed it in. "Elena!" Gabriel's heart stopped. Was she still inside? He released the rogue and lunged for the office door, kicking it open. Smoke billowed out, thick and choking. Gabriel's eyes watered immediately, his throat burning as he inhaled.

Every breath turned to steam before vanishing into the dead air. “Keep tight,” I muttered, my voice barely audible over the crunching beneath us. We were ghosts moving in white hell. Then—a scent. Faint. Bitter. Smoky. Sootshade. A rare herb. Burn it, and wolves can’t pick up shit. That’s what they were using. Smart bastards. I narrowed my eyes. I couldn't see jack through the dense dark. My night goggles flickered for a second—interference. Fuck. Then it moved.

I take my own as Baylee coughs and splutters, screwing her face up as the cans start to explode one after the other. The pain and anguish they all feel around me, almost floors me. The wolfsbane stung but not like it stung them, drake coughs, falling forward and dropping as he half plays the part and half needs to fall because of the pain of the gas, it burns their lungs but not enough to stop their wolf from helping them to fight. As the smoke clears I see the shadows of people, walking through our territory, the stink of rogues smelling up the place.

The he murmurs, "Hot, hot." Siena is right, but my problem now is how do I handle my fear once I'm in front of him? Can I face him? _ I received a call from Alpha Liam not to cook a lunch meal for him because he has a meeting right at noon and the person he is with in the meeting is the one will join him for lunch. But he wants me to cook food for Ross and Travis who are currently in the hospital. I asked what kind of smoke he used earlier and why they weakened that fast. Then he gave me the answer that it was wolfsbane and dangerous to werewolves.

The only thing I was good at was studying and getting good grades in college. “Hey, look.” the sniper beside me tapped on my shoulder as if calling me and I frowned. He pointed something at the garden. I turned around and looked down. That’s when I saw the smoke coming out of the broken bottle of wolfsbane and it spread rapidly around the area. The wolves close to that area started to scream in pain as their furs were being burned. I was shocked. Wait…how did that happen?
