The kind of emotions that made fools of smart women. But still, she didn’t close the journal. She left it open. Like a promise.

“Today’s going to be slower. Softer. We’ve cleared the afternoon of all group sessions—it’s yours, except for the couples, who have to be at the couple track program. But before that, we invite you to begin this last day in quiet reflection. Head over to the pavilion when you’re ready—we’ve set up cushions and journals in a shaded space for our Personal Journaling Ceremony. It’s mandatory, as it’s a sacred part of closing this journey.” She reached into her satchel and placed four small, pieces of paper on each table, one for each of them. “These are yours to keep. The prompts are written on it, things to guide you if you’re not sure where to begin.” She tapped the paper gently. “Prompts lik

"I am ready." She looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded. "Good. Because I have been saving a project for the right student. Oral histories of Black women in the South. Your grandmother's generation. Women who lived through Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement. Their stories need to be recorded before they are lost." My heart beat faster. "That sounds perfect." "It will be hard. You will have to travel. Conduct interviews. Transcribe hours of tape. But if you do it well, it could be published."

The thought made her pulse quicken, like she was holding a secret that wasn’t meant to be found. She hesitated only a moment before sitting cross-legged on the floor and flipping the cover open. Inside, in messy handwriting, was a title scrawled across the first page: “Collected Stories — From Women, For Women.” Chloe blinked. The handwriting was feminine, rushed, and almost secretive. She turned the page and read the introduction, scrawled in looping letters:

The second portrait event was not called a portrait event. It was called — in the magazine's promotional materials, in the invitation that arrived at my Lincoln Square apartment three weeks after the feature ran — An Evening of Recognition: Women in Science and Advocacy, Chicago Chapter. Harrison Wells had co-sponsored it. He had called Patricia in February to discuss the idea — a reframing of the annual Gold Coast event, a deliberate reclamation of the venue and the occasion from the narrative that had been attempted there in November. He had asked, through Patricia, whether I would be willing to attend.

Mirella didn’t answer. She just pressed the linen word into Kaya’s hand again and said: “Now carry it somewhere we’ve never been.” Later, back in Cyprus, Kaya wrote a short, unscheduled message in the Listening House journal: History is not fixed. It is a mirror made of shifting breath. The ones who live after the noise Are the ones who decide what justice sounds like.

Not because anyone seeks recognition. Because everyone understands what is at stake. If history belongs to people, then people must participate in recording it. Near one discussion table, a middle-aged woman shares a story about her grandmother. The account itself seems simple. Her grandmother operated a small bakery for decades. Nothing more. Nothing less. The woman smiles as she speaks. "She never appeared in official records." Several listeners nod. The situation feels familiar. Yet the speaker continues. "She fed families during shortages." Her voice softens. "She taught apprentices."

After repacking her bag she came across a journal book that had a pen holder. She flashed back to the day she received the Journal from Gemma no. She was joyful for a moment until she remembered what happened last night. She couldn't help but shed a tear. As soon as she got over the feeling of sadness she slid the pen out of its holder placed; The wedding Journal in front of her, opened the leather-bound journal,l and opened the first page. The writing prompt was; 🌹A bride must always be organized 🌹 She looked at the heading for a moment and took a deep breath and decided to take the plunge, she took the pen in between her thumb and index fingertips and started writing.

I mask the discomfort with a neutral tone, but my fingers tighten briefly on the edge of the desk. "The line between legend and lived experience is never as clear as we like to think," I say, holding their gaze. "Sometimes, history leaves gaps. And in those gaps, stories grow." I click to the final slide, a question projected in bold: “What purpose do monsters serve?” "That’s your prompt for next week’s reflection journal," I add. "I want your personal theories, draw from what we’ve discussed today and what you’ve felt when engaging with these stories. Think deeper than the surface."

We must all come together and fight yet another battle that is against women all around the world. I finished up my writing piece for today feeling quite proud of myself. I edited what I wrote and saved it and sent it over to my boss for a review before it gets put into the magazine. Finally being able to write for a magazine feels amazing, like I have a purpose; and the first piece I chose to write about was a powerful piece and I hope it reaches out to a lot of women. I yawned and stretched my arms upwards real good when an email notification popped onto my computer window screen.
