We got closer and the buildings peeled away and there was a shop set behind a small parking lot with pumps and oil marks, and fireflies dancing through the overhead lights like stars warring darkness.
“Fuel,” Momma says. “People have to stop here, even if they won’t stop for a woman and a little girl walking alone late at night.” Something so bitter in her voice, like she couldn’t swallow.
She let go of my hand to dig through her coat pockets. The clink of loose change. “We can make a plan with this,” she said. Then she smiled, dropped her arm around my shoulders and hugged me close to her as we walked. “You and me, we can make a plan with anything.”
