She stepped inside slowly, afraid that the room might vanish if she moved too quickly, that it might have been only a trick of her imagination. The soft hush of the place wrapped around her shoulders like a cloak. For the first time in weeks, she felt something other than fear gnawing at her—she felt wonder. Her fingers brushed the spine of a book, fragile and rough beneath her touch. She had always hungered for knowledge, though life had denied her the luxury. The more she flipped pages, the more shocked she became. She didn’t know if she should feel disgusted at the gory acts or in awe of how it is carried out.
