“Because it didn’t sound like a random word. And he didn’t look—normal.”
Kai closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, like he was arguing with someone I couldn’t hear.
When he opened them again, his voice was careful.
“Mates,” he said, “are a bond.”
“That’s not an answer,” I said.
“It’s the beginning of one,” he countered.
I glared at him.
“Try again,” I said. “Without the mystical one-word sentences.”
A corner of his mouth twitched, almost a smile, but it faded fast.
