I smiled, though it felt more like a grimace. Before we could continue the conversation, a man took the stage, his voice booming through the microphone. “It’s time for the presentation of awards!” he announced, and the crowd erupted in applause. The awards ceremony took about thirty minutes, and when it was over, the gala was coming to a close. Adrian had won five awards that night. The two that stood out to me were ‘Richest CEO of the Year’ and ‘Best CEO Humanitarian of the Year.’ He was the only one with five awards, and I couldn’t help but notice how Carlos seemed to fume at the recognition Adrian received, though he tried hard to hide it.

I didn't ask for specifics. When it came time for the awards, the award people played the usual game of announcing the winner in each category - which did not include us. One of those "winners" was actually a second place award winner, because the grand prize winner was first in it's category, but like the Oscars and other award shows, it had to be announced last and they could not telegraph it.

According to the notice, every year, each department at Wexford Ivy recognizes the most outstanding researcher in their field. From what I had learnt about it, the award was given to the student who demonstrated exceptional research skills and made significant contributions to their field of study. The winner received a generous grant to further their research, as well as mentorship from a renowned expert in their field and a guaranteed publication in a top-tier journal. It was a game-changer for any student's career.

Nathan gives a brief introduction for each person, submitted by whoever nominated them for the award, then the winner walks up to the podium to collect their engraved glass trophy, which is an intricate sculpture of the R Roswell logo. There are usually about 20 winners, and Nathan makes quick work of running through the list. There’s a woman from HR, someone from the marketing department who’s relatively new, a man from the product design team, a seasoned member of the PR department, and one of the custodial staff. They’re all absolutely delighted to receive the award, smiling wide and bowing and practically bouncing back to their seats, and it’s heartwarming to see them all so happy.

There were two other awardees next: the Social Butterfly Award and the Most Dramatic Career Pivot Award. Host: “The next two awards are... a little special. So special that the winners are getting actual crowns. Because why not?” An assistant brought out what appeared to be a crown for a man and a woman. Next to the crowns were two glasses of wine.
