The closed door had been the signal that Don was working, that he was pushing against something, that there was resistance that had to be overcome. The closed door of the fourth book was the door of someone who had moved past the wrestling into the sustained attention. The resistance was gone — not because the writing was easy, but because Don had learned to be with the difficulty rather than fighting it. The writing was hard in the way that the bread Wednesday was hard — the hard of precision, not the hard of struggle. The hard of being fully present to what you were doing, not the hard of trying to do something you had not yet learned to do.

“Anyway. Stop frowning. How’s the new series? Did your editor stop sending you those passive-aggressive smiley faces?” “Editor’s fine. I’m the one malfunctioning.” I slumped back in the chair. “I’ve hit a wall. Like a real, brick, municipal wall. The smut won’t smut. The kisses taste like cardboard. Every intimate scene reads like two mannequins bumping plastic lips.” She snorted into her wine. “So… writer’s block.” “More like libido block,” I muttered. “I haven’t been able to write heat because I haven’t felt it. Not for anyone.”

The air between us crackles. I tap the folder. “This is missing the part where I get to burn things.” He reaches over, flips to a blank page at the back, and hands me a Montblanc. “Write whatever you want,” he says. “I’ll sign it in blood if it makes you feel better.” I stare at the pen. I write one line in block letters: THEO WHITFORD WILL BEG BEFORE THIS IS OVER. I slide it back. He signs beneath it without reading. His handwriting is sharp, impatient, beautiful.
