Not a question asked. I blinked. “They obey you very quickly.” “They are my pack,” he said simply. I watched them decorate everything in sight, laughing as someone spilled flour upon someone else. The air smelled warm and sweet, filled with cinnamon, vanilla, and something reminiscent of spiced fruit. Children argued good-naturedly over dough shapes. Someone sang in a rather dreadful key. I had never seen anything like it. “Is this what Christmas is?” I asked softly. Marek leaned slightly toward me. “Part of it. People decorate, bake, share gifts, spend time with family and loved ones.”

I want to stay in this happy little bubble for as long as possible. After that fluke thunderstorm we had last week, it seems like Mother Nature is finally getting her act together. There's a slight chill in the air by the time we exit the car in the front courtyard, and I take a deep breath, savoring the crispness that signals the approach of the fall weather. “I can't wait for Christmas,” I confess as we walk hand in hand through the front door. “Why is that?” “Well, one, I can't wait to decorate the house, and two cookies.”

Her little fingers traced circles on the cold glass. “Because he knocked on my window last year.” My entire skeleton froze. “What?” She nodded, hugging her reindeer tighter. “He asked me if I wanted a Christmas surprise. He said all I had to do was let him in.” “Tell me you didn’t.” “I didn’t… but he said he’d come back.” Oh, fantastic. Wonderful. Great. A cheerful holiday tradition of traumatizing children. I knelt down. “Ivy… you should’ve told someone.”

I sat quietly, and turned to look at the tree with her. “I don’t want it to end.” Chastity whispered. “What?” I asked. “Christmas.” “It was a great day.” “It was the best Christmas I have ever had. For me, Christmas meant making huge meals for everyone I wasn’t allowed to share in. It meant listening as everyone else opened gifts, and had fun. Until Jax left for school he would give me a gift, and so did Luna Jane, but once they were gone those stopped.” “Chastity, I am so sorry.”

Each person would draw a festive holiday-themed prompt from a hat and act it out, while the others guessed what it was. As we settled into our spots, it quickly became clear that Chris was not fully engaged. He made an effort to join in, pulling a slip of paper from the hat and trying his best to act out "building a snowman," but his heart didn't seem to be in it. His movements were sluggish, and his attempts at humor fell flat. I watched him from across the room, my heart aching a little. I missed his usual jolly personality—the way his laughter could light up a room. Seeing him like this on Christmas Day felt like a cloud hanging over the festivities.

Maybe we can start some new traditions together. I still don’t have a clue what to get them for Christmas, but luckily, I still have a little over a week to figure it out. The movie was cute. I wish this town was turned into a winter wonderland the way they do in movies. Movies always make Christmas look magical.
