"Good. Stay connected to Sarah. If this goes sideways, we need extraction." She nods, but the worry doesn't reach her eyes. She is past worrying. We keep moving, pushing deeper into the tunnel. Then I hear it. A high-pitched whine, right at the edge of hearing. Ultrasonic. "Stop," I say, grabbing her arm. Isla freezes. I scan ahead. Thermal shows nothing, but the sound is directional, coming from the ceiling tiles ahead. A sonic deterrent. Non-lethal, but designed to drop a man to his knees with vertigo. If we cross that threshold, it’ll hit with the force of a physical blow—nausea, disorientation, total loss of balance.

Kaelen roared. He charged the clone. The boy didn't move. He didn't flinch. He just pressed a button on his cane. A high-pitched whine filled the arena. Kaelen stopped. He grabbed his head. He screamed. He fell to his knees clawing at his ears. "Sonic frequency," the boy explained calmly. "Designed specifically for the Genesis physiology. It liquefies the brain." Kaelen writhed in the mud. Blood began to pour from his ears.

The impact threw debris into the air, and the shockwave hit my chest like a hammer. She stood in the crater she’d made, her gaze sweeping across us with no hint of recognition, only rage. How were we supposed to knock her unconscious when she could dodge everything we threw at her? We needed to disorient her. I reached behind me and pulled out the Sonic screamer. "Zack, get your head down! Those aren't survey drones!" Victor’s boots slammed into the lunar dust, sending a grey plume spiraling upward in the weak gravity. He lunged, grabbing Zack by the back of his tactical vest and hauling him behind a jagged obsidian ridge. A fraction of a second later, a beam of concentrated sonic energy shrieked over their heads.
