“You have a grandmother?” “Yes, but back to santa. I do believe him, and he comes in the New Year with a female sidekick called the Snowmaiden,” Alexander told her. ‘But you can celebrate Christmas any way you want while you’re with me. I didn’t even know the festival existed until I went to live with my grandmother.”

“Please welcome our contestants to the stage!” I watched as ten couples climbed onto the stage. Each one brought their own energy—the young pairs in matching Ankara outfits, the newlyweds glowing in white and gold, and a particular couple, who wore Santa hats and had cheeky grins that immediately endeared them to the audience. As soon as they took their position on the stage, we got to games immediately. I took charge of the trivia round, my voice steady as I read the first question. “What is the Yoruba name for Christmas?”

Jax seemed happy that I was more docile. In truth I just wanted the children to have a decent holiday season. Money had been tight, and I felt bad that the children did not have a ton of gifts to open on Christmas morning. Surprisingly, they were all excited for the gifts that they did receive. Jax gave everyone the best gift of all though with Daisy

They froze. Snow fell around them. Her hair brushed his jaw. His hands were on her waist. “You’re heavy,” he said. “You’re lying,” she shot back. For a heartbeat, everything else disappeared. Then— “DAAAADDYYYY!” Noelle slid into them like a missile. Sebastian groaned. Nyra burst out laughing. “This,” Nyra said between laughs, “is the best Christmas I’ve had in years.” Sebastian stood, brushing snow off. “You’re enjoying this far too much.”

Evan Wolversen ran through the Packhouse of the Black River Pack. Life was settling down after all the fighting and, of course, his birthday. Now there was a lot of excitement buzzing about as everyone started getting ready for Yule’s first day. He’d been learning all about Yuletide; it’s crazy long celebrations. Who would have thought of Christmas celebrated from December twenty-first to the New Year? It was one party that lasted the whole time. His pup grouping was getting together to finish making yule presents for everyone. It seemed to like a lot of work. But everyone got a present every day of Yule. Little things like cards, ornaments, food, and toys.

Christmas was the reading of the book. This Christmas, Don's book was a novel—Norwegian, which was not a coincidence, a novel by the same writer whose essays were in the Norway reading programme. The novel was called The Dark Year, and it was about a man who spent a winter alone in a cabin in the far north of Norway, experiencing the full darkness for the first time. Don had been saving it since September, when he had finished the essays. He had placed it on the shelf above his desk, the designated holding place for the Christmas book, and had not opened it once.

Autumn had passed and winter was there and with it came snow, the entire New York was covered with white snow very where you looked there was Christmas Trees and Christmas songs playing everywhere and there was Christmas in the air, that say was Christmas Eve, the family's Christmas dinner and tomorrow was Nate's birthday.

I walked out and ate it slowly, the cold sweetness melting on my tongue. The snow began to fall harder, dusting the sidewalks and rooftops in white. Christmas lights were already strung up on the streetlights, glowing warm against the darkening sky. Red and green and gold, twinkling in the cold air. Christmas was coming. Arya's first Christmas. She should be old enough to start staring at twinkling lights and giggling at them. I passed by a fashion store and stopped in front of the window. A long wool coat in a deep burgundy color stood on a mannequin catching all what's left of my attention.

"Questions about past bring shadows to present. Understand?" I nodded, touched by her concern. "I understand, Yiayia. Thank you for trusting me with your story." "Not my story," she corrected gently. "Thea's story. Now little bit your story too." She patted my cheek one final time. "God keep you safe, girl with honest eyes." I stepped out into the chilly December afternoon, my head spinning with revelations. The streets were decorated for Christmas, twinkling lights strung across storefronts, wreaths adorning doorways. The festive atmosphere felt surreal.

"Well, get ready for a crash course then." "Christmas is a special time of the year," she explained, her voice filled with warmth. "It's a time when people come together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It's a time of love, joy, and giving. We exchange gifts, spend time with loved ones, and spread kindness to others."
