Only Thomas’ mocking voice, saying, “So, what now, babe? All the nearest rescue teams ran. They’re pulling the fire brigade from the city. “Even then, it’ll be at least half an hour. With power. The world fractures into red and gold. Heat devours everything. The scream tears from my throat— I wake choking on smoke that isn’t there. My room is dark. Quiet. Whole.

Her silhouette, familiar. “What is this?” she asked. “It’s the record of the Fireborn,” he said. “There’s only ever one in a generation. Sometimes none. It skips centuries. But when the world begins to change—when things grow restless—that fire finds a home.” She closed the journal, her heart thudding. “Why me?”

The fire in my blood was too hot. I ran into the stables, where five of my most loyal warriors were already on their horses. They held torches and heavy iron swords, their faces serious and ready for war. A large black horse was waiting for me, its breath coming out in white clouds in the freezing air. I leaped onto the horse's back without using the stirrups, grabbing the leather reins tightly in my hands. "Which way did they go?" I shouted to the scout standing by the stable door.
