But now that he urgently needs their help, no one wants to help. He has always seen these things happen in soap operas but never would he have thought that it would happen to him someday. Something was in the air, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. “Help!” I called, knowing fully well that I was calling out for nothing. Nobody was going to help me if they heard me. They were probably the ones who were polluting the air with whatever it was. My skin started to burn, and I started to grunt. “Argh!” I screamed with all the might I had in me. Even if they didn’t want to help them, I hoped that my scream was enough to haunt them and get them to run toward me and get me out of there.

How could I stay safe but still get help? ‘Maybe they will let me use their phone?’ No, my phone didn't work here, so theirs probably wouldn't either. ‘Maybe they could drive home and call a tow truck for me?’ Yes, but that would leave me here alone again, waiting. What if another, worse person came by while I waited? I looked around the totally empty landscape. What were the chances that another car would drive down this road soon? Zero, maybe? If this was my only chance for help, I would be very foolish to send this person away.

Nevertheless, I couldn't shake the persistent sensation that someone might be in dire need of my help. I walked to the old dusty couch and sat down. My thoughts were consumed with weighing my options. One possibility that came to mind was reaching out to the authorities. I contemplated informing them of the spine-chilling screams that pierced the air and then making my exit from the premises in a discreet manner once they arrived. When I realized I needed to call the police, I tried using my phone but couldn't get any reception. Dammit! I couldn't believe I had no reception. My stomach was starting to growl, and I wished I had eaten more than just a salad today.

“Can you come downstairs with me?” Dani couldn’t answer. Her mind was racing. Mama and Daddy always said if she needed help, she should find a policeman. Do I need help? She didn’t know. “Is it ok if I pick you up? We can go see some people outside that are here to help you. Is that ok?”
