"ถ้าพี่ต้องการแค่เพื่อนเที่ยวคงไม่นอนกับธาม ไม่พาไปเจอครอบครัว ไม่ต้องสนใจว่าพ่อแม่พี่จะคิดกับธามยังไง ไม่พามาที่ฮ่องกงด้วยกัน ไม่จำเป็นต้องให้ใครรู้ว่าธามมีตัวตนอยู่ในชีวิตพี่" ธามไทไม่จำเป็นต้องมีตัวตนเลยก็ได้ เพราะสถานะของเขามันก็แค่เด็กในปกครองของเธอ แต่เฮสเทียก็ให้สิทธิ์เขาเข้ามาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเธอ รู้จักกับคนสำคัญในชีวิตซึ่งไม่จำเป็นต้องทำแบบนั้นเลยก็ตาม "ธามอาจจะคิดว่าพี่เห็นแก่ตัว แล้วใครบ้างที่มันไม่เห็นแก่ตัว ใครจะอยากเจ็บ ใครมันจะอยากทำร้ายหัวใจตัวเอง ถึงคนอื่นให้คำนิยามว่าพี่เป็นเจ้าแม่ แต่ก็ไม่ได้แปลว่าพี่จะควบคุมทุกอย่างได้นะ" เฮสเทียเปิดเผยความรู้สึกทั้งหมดให้เขารับรู้ เพราะเธอไม่อยากให้เขาเข้าใจอะไรผิด ๆ ว่าสิ่งที่เธอทำมันเป็นการให้ความหวังลม ๆ แล้ง ๆ แก่เขา "ธามคิดว่าธามพยายามอยู่ฝ่ายเดียวเหรอ พี่เองก็กำลังพยายามอยู่เหมือนกันนะ"

ในวัยเข้าเลขหก ฉันเลือกทางเดินชีวิตใหม่ ในวันครบรอบวันแต่งงาน ฉันกำลังเก็บกวาดบ้านได้เจออัลบั้มภาพถ่ายอัลบั้มหนึ่งเข้า ที่แท้สามีฉันมักจะพาคู่ขาของเขาไปถ่ายรูปแต่งงานในวันนี้ทุกๆ ปี ตั้งแต่อายุสี่สิบถึงหกสิบปี จากผมดำจนกลายเป็นผมหงอก ตลอดยี่สิบปีไม่เคยขาดหาย ด้านหลังภาพถ่ายยังมีลายมือของสามีฉันที่เขียนไว้ว่า ‘แด่สุดที่รักของผม’ ในเมื่อคนที่เขารักไม่ใช่ฉันอีก ฉันก็ไม่จำเป็นต้องคนรับใช้ให้เขาต่อไป เลี้ยงลูกแล้วตามด้วยเลี้ยงหลาน อยู่แบบมึนงงมาครึ่งค่อนชีวิตแล้ว จะเปลี่ยนตัวเองตอนนี้ก็ยังไม่สาย

"พี่ไคท์ต้องการหาเพื่อนนอนเหรอคะ" "เราคิดว่าไง" "พี่ไคท์หาคนอื่นไม่ดีกว่าเหรอคะ ขิมไม่มีประสบการณ์ คงทำให้พี่ไคท์พอใจไม่ได้" "พี่ไม่ติด พี่สอนเราได้" "..."
