Oh man, 'Zodiac Academy ͵ The Awakening' is where the series really digs its heels in. I was lukewarm on the first book—it felt like a Harry Potter-meets-Sarah J. Maas mashup that hadn't fully decided on its own voice. But book two? The twin dynamic between Tory and Darcy actually starts paying off. The elemental magic system gets more intricate, the political scheming amps up, and the bullying from the Heirs... it's less petty and starts feeling genuinely dangerous, like there are real stakes beyond high school drama.

That said, if you hated the first book's tropes—the fated mates vibe, the over-the-top mean girl antics, the cliffhanger ending—you're not gonna magically love this one. It doubles down on all of it. But for fantasy fans who enjoy a soapy, addictive blend of urban fantasy and academy romance with a side of brutal fae politics, it's a solid step up. The pacing is faster, the world outside the academy peeks through, and you start seeing the chess pieces move for the larger war. I blew through it in a weekend, annoyed but unable to put it down.

It's not high literature, but it's a blast if you're in the right headspace.

I just finished re-reading it last week, and the main ones are still the Heirs, plus Darcy and Tory, obviously. But in book two, you really start getting more from the faculty and some of the other students. Lionel Acrux is way more present as the big bad dad, which amps up the tension with Darius. We also get a lot more of Seth's perspective, seeing his conflicts with the twins and his own family legacy. And Clara gets fleshed out a bit more as Darius's friend, which adds another layer to the social dynamics at the academy.

It's not so much about introducing brand-new main characters as it is deepening the ones we already know. Tory's connection to Caleb becomes a huge driver of the plot, and Darcy's elemental magic gets more focus. The Shadow Princess, Lavinia, also becomes a more tangible threat. The core group is still the twins and the four Heirs, but their relationships and internal struggles become the real heart of the book.

I was so relieved when I finally cracked open 'Ruthless Fae' and got some answers after that brutal ending to book one. The immediate pressure from Darius's threat gets addressed pretty quickly—like, within the first few chapters—which was a huge weight off my shoulders. The twins are scrambling to catch up after the big revelation about their heritage, and the book spends a lot of time on their magical training and navigating the political mess at the academy.

That being said, 'resolve' might be too strong a word. It answers the immediate 'what happens next?' from the cliffhanger, but it layers on even bigger problems and ends on another, arguably even more intense, cliffhanger involving Lionel and a major betrayal. So you get closure on one front just to have the floor drop out from under you on another. Classic Zodiac Academy move, really.
