Not just acid rain; there would also be toxic fog, endless daylight, endless night, ancient viruses released from melting glaciers, tectonic collisions, and worse. Nicole's chest tightened. She hadn't expected each stage of the apocalypse to become harder than the last. Suddenly, it felt like her preparations were nowhere near enough. "It's okay," Zeph reassured her calmly. "We'll figure out ways to gather what we need." He had awakened later than she had, and retiring from service had taken time. Most of the supplies in his apartment had been purchased online beforehand. He had risked his life gathering more during the typhoon, but nobody could predict how long the disasters would continue.

"In the late stages of the apocalypse, anti-inflammatory medicine will be the hardest to find. We should stock up now. Later, a single pill could be worth a cow." Mom bought a large supply of medicine from dealers—anti-inflammatories, cold and flu remedies, painkillers, antibiotics, bandages, disinfectants, thermometers, and more. I silently reviewed my chemistry formulas for the exam, paying no mind to the ridiculous stockpiling. Giselle reinforced the doors and windows and even installed solar panels on the balcony. Zombies later would chew through power lines, and the city would experience massive blackouts. Still, idiots would remain as idiots no matter how many times they were reborn.

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I looked out at the apartment building in the distance. Flames were shooting into the sky, and faint screams carried through the air. Linda and Tyler had hidden from the zombies by climbing into a dumpster downstairs. They were curled up in the reeking trash, shivering as they fought over half a moldy bread roll someone had thrown away. Meanwhile, I took a sip of hot soup, warmth spreading through my whole body. This was what apocalypse life was supposed to feel like. Over the next three days, I followed Duke’s guidance and swept up supplies from nearly half the city.

The solar generator sat on the balcony, and the freezer hummed steadily. The compound bow was mounted on the wall, with arrows lined up neatly beside it. The machetes and stun batons stayed within easy reach. This was my apocalypse shelter, the place that would keep me alive when the zombies hit. Night fell while I organized the last of the supplies, and my phone rang. A familiar name flashed on the screen. Jessica. I stared at it and smirked. The real show was finally about to begin.

Their eyes were empty, unfocused, and they were both wearing a strange, hollow smile. The rescue team leader stepped forward. "Mr. Sands? Mrs. Sands?" Dad suddenly clutched the tin of spam against his chest and shrank backward, his eyes wide. "Shh. Be quiet," he whispered, his voice shaking. "There are zombies out there. Going outside means death. "This is the last of our food. We have to ration it. We have to make it last." Mom nodded along beside him, completely serious. "One less mouth to feed. You'll get to live a few more days."

" I looked at the three blue vials that appeared in my hand and smiled. With these, Mom and Dad could awaken their superpowers, so we'd finally have the power to protect ourselves in this apocalypse. "Damn it… I almost forgot about you while dealing with the two losers." The bald leader was about to charge forward and hack at the door when a deafening roar erupted from the end of the street. The fresh scent of blood had drawn an even larger horde. Zombies poured in like a tidal wave, and their glowing red eyes were a terrifying sight in the darkness. "Boss, the zombies are here! Run!" The remaining tugs were scared out of their wits. They grabbed their raving leader and bolted, while the lat

Just like any movie. Adam halted as they reached the stores. The lights were off but the doors were wide open, inviting anyone to roam the aisles of treats. "Here's the plan," Adam muttered quietly, as if there were people hiding, listening. "One of us will go in and collect as much as we can. We don't need a lot right now, only food, medical supplies, and water bottles." Brie awkwardly scratched the back of her head. "We're stealing?" "Does it look like anybody is in there? Don't worry." Adam finally put Melissa down to let her stretch her legs.

"Wha- now?" "Yes! Now!" "But whatever it is can wait, it can't be as important as you-" "Zander has a whole bedroom of vials filled with my blood, Mason ... If Demitri and the others get their hands on it then we are going to be facing an army full of day walkers!"
