In the makeshift chapel, Sister Catherine was on her knees before the cross. A bloody hole gaped in her neck. A zombie was hunched over her, greedily tearing at her flesh. It had crawled in through an air vent. “Oh God…” Marcus retched. I grabbed a nearby iron chalice and slammed it into the zombie’s head.

Because that’s what people did when survival was on the line. I’d seen it before in online stories. News clips. Disasters. People helping each other until the fear got too loud. And now we were living in that fear. Except this time, the world had rules. Sick, cruel rules that made the killing clean and entertaining. My gaze shifted across the room, and of course, I found him. Hoodie guy. He was leaning against the wall, hands in his pockets, watching just like me. He wasn’t trying to form a team. He wasn’t even pretending to and for a moment I almost dared entertain the idea of forming a team with me. I mean, he saved me.

After Julian died, the horde in the hallway did not leave. The dozens of zombies devoured every bit of Julian's flesh and blood, but they still lingered outside the penthouse. They could smell a living person through the crack under the door. Bang! Bang! The zombies began throwing themselves against the front door. But by the thirtieth day of the zombie apocalypse and a month of neglect, with Julian's frantic pounding and the zombies' relentless attacks, the door finally gave way. Metal groaned under the strain. And then…

Kim grabbed my shoulder and yelled, "This won't do! You can't be unpresentable at your grandfather-in-law's funeral! Change into new clothes right now!" She tried to drag me toward the door. Blood gushed from his body. The other contestants scattered in fear. When the competition ended, I was the only one who remained unscathed. No one could accuse me of having no superpower anymore.
