MAYA'S POV I take a deep breath and move my feet toward the staircase, my eyes darting around. I notice different areas of the academy blocked off with red ropes and the inscriptions reading NO ENTRY where monsters are at work in the damaged parts of the academy. “Wow, they’re rebuilding this place fast,” I say. Lux nods. “Yes. The academy has old money. They can run anything they want, as fast as they want.” We take the stairs up to the second floor. It's empty with no students in sight. Classes haven’t fully resumed yet, as I can spot some broken parts not yet to be rebuilt. I see buildings being repainted, nails and hammers already in place.

Like something that has been asleep for a very long time and is not quite asleep anymore. I open my eyes. Zara is watching me with her pen stopped above her notebook. She read the change in my expression before I said anything. "What is it?" she asks quietly. My hands are completely still. No silver light. No temperature change. The grounding held perfectly — the power stayed exactly where I put it, contained and quiet, while something ancient and enormous breathed in the dark directly below our feet.
