He inched closer like he was approaching a wild animal. To be frank, maybe I was. It felt like my heart was about to climb out of my chest. “Why am I really here?” “Exactly what I told you. We’re trying to help you and figure out why your mark is different.’ “What’s it to you what happens to me anyway?” “Because if you run wild you could become a danger to humans.” He paused. “You could die if you don’t know how to contain your magic or the change. That’s what the academy is for. It’s to help you manage all of it.”

Eyes on me. I glance up—and sure enough, it’s Aiden, locking his classroom. He carries the master keys to the entire academy. There's so much knowledge at the tips of his fingers. With those keys, he can access the library, the archives, even the computer lab. He's free to go wherever he wants to go. No one else has that kind of freedom. Not even the other Doms. He halts. Eyes sharp. Studying me like I’m a riddle he’s desperate to solve. Like I'm a missing puzzle piece. Dark intent clouds his face, but underneath that… What is that?

It is where the strongest are chosen to move on, and the weak either die, quit, or get expelled. Werewolf Academy isn’t your regular human university. There, we are taught the necessary skills to survive the incoming war. We study like the human do, but learning their science and technology is in no way fundamental to us. We have the Moon Goddess. The Academy was stitched together with old magic, its bones laced with the founders’ blood, its heart bound by runes carved into the earth itself. I could feel them now, those invisible threads, wrapping around towers and classrooms, dormitories and hidden stairwells. They quivered under the storm’s weight. And under me. My hand pressed against the glass, and in the flash of lightning, the glass spiderwebbed with cracks. The door behind me opened with a low groan.
