If I don't find a way to vent this energy, I'm going to end up in an isolation cell. If I don't find something to hit—or better yet, someone to pay me to hit them—I'm going to lose my mind. There's an email from AC that I'm pointedly ignoring because I don't know what to do. Me, Zach, Max, Eliot and Oscar have enough credits to pass the year... just. But our attendance isn't good enough. After Zahra's kidnapping, we basically stopped attending, and while the academy has given us some discretion under the circumstances, it's still touch and go whether we'll pass the year. Violet’s fierce gaze shifted from her dream to the chicken. “If you dream of being a superhero, then you have to live like one,” Alpha Matthew said. “Wake up before the sun, clean your body, and eat breakfast. Then you can enter the academy.” “Academy?” Violet’s expression turned to one of surprise. “We’ll explain everything after you’ve showered. MAYA'S POV I take a deep breath and move my feet toward the staircase, my eyes darting around. I notice different areas of the academy blocked off with red ropes and the inscriptions reading NO ENTRY where monsters are at work in the damaged parts of the academy. “Wow, they’re rebuilding this place fast,” I say. Lux nods. “Yes. The academy has old money. They can run anything they want, as fast as they want.” We take the stairs up to the second floor. It's empty with no students in sight. Classes haven’t fully resumed yet, as I can spot some broken parts not yet to be rebuilt. I see buildings being repainted, nails and hammers already in place.

Like something that has been asleep for a very long time and is not quite asleep anymore. I open my eyes. Zara is watching me with her pen stopped above her notebook. She read the change in my expression before I said anything. "What is it?" she asks quietly. My hands are completely still. No silver light. No temperature change. The grounding held perfectly — the power stayed exactly where I put it, contained and quiet, while something ancient and enormous breathed in the dark directly below our feet. "Zara," I say, keeping my voice very steady. "How deep do the academy's foundations go?"
