I whispered. He smiled faintly, but it didn't reach. his eyes. "Don't worry. As much as I am her attorney, I won't let her get you into any lawyer trouble. If she attempts to, I'll abort it before it even starts. And if she ever goes behind my back and finds somebody else to take her case, then I'll represent you myself. Trust me, most attorneys wouldn't want to get into a battle with me anyway. My reputation alone keeps them at arms' length."

I earned his dad’s trust, and he can’t even earn a word from the man. Still, I know that I can't take this conversation any further. I’m his lawyer and I have to deal with him. That means bailing him out of trouble, defending him in court, and trying to make him see reason without pushing him over the edge. I hate that I have to pretend I care about him and that I’m on his side, when more often than not, I strongly disagree with him.

A gallery of wooden benches where observers sat. We sat in the gallery. The facility’s legal team was already present, three lawyers at the respondent’s table with the specific energy of people who had prepared a defense and were ready to deploy it. Priya had described their lead counsel to me on the drive over, a woman named Hartley who specialised in institutional defense and who was, Priya said, technically excellent and strategically predictable. Slow and deliberately. “And I’m very good at exposing rot.” My pulse kicked. “You’re going to fight the lawsuit?”

" He introduces. He looks like he's in his early fifties with peppered hair and a few stress wrinkles over his face. "Rosaleigh Clarkson, Mr Grey's personal assistant." I return and motion for him to take a seat which I take opposite him. "I'm not sure if Xander told you but I'm a criminal defense lawyer. I've been in this line of work for thrity five years now, I am the best of the best in the country and I'm happy to be at your service." He smiles but I find it hard to return it. I remain silent, a criminal defense lawyer? He's got to be kidding me.

He shook his head, "Far from that, my dear. No one is above the law, but his team of lawyers are wolves who would do anything to win a case and when I say anything, I mean going as far as ruining my name and reputation, just to ensure that I do not represent you in court. You might end up finding yourself alone, without a lawyer to help you. Now don't give up hope just yet. I am trying to make sure you understand what the outcome might be if you take him to court. You could get lucky if you make it to court and the judge has something against Max Anderson, but trust me, he's powerful enough to ensure that the judge who will be on seat on the day your case will be heard, is someone on his pay

There was no need for the pretense. Newton's frown deepened when he heard Jasper's words. "Do you mean I couldn't be an attorney just because we were indebted to the Taylors?" Simon would not have it. Faking a smile, he countered, "As a professional, I categorize people into two groups. They are either my clients or they are not. "I will do my best for Ms. Betty because she's my client. Is there anything wrong with that? If you hire me for a case, I'll do my job just as diligently. This has nothing to do with gratitude."
