“Welcome to your new home, Mia.”

Drew steps aside a smile spreading across his face as he shows me the apartment.

I look around the cozy space taking everything in. It’s smaller than I imagined but at this point I would live in a shoe box if it meant being reunited with my brother again.

I look at the worn hardwood floors, and the compact kitchenette opening to the living room where faded curtains hang and I smile to myself.

I turn to Drew, my face lighting up with excitement. "It's perfect, D!"

I launch myself into his arms for a tight hug and he chuckles as he wraps his own around me.

"I know it's small, but it's what I can afford right now.” He says and I can hear the apology in his voice.

I know the sacrifices Drew has already made just so that I could move in with him. He’s only twenty, juggling two jobs all while attending college and now he has taken on the responsibility of taking care of me. It’s more than I can ask for and I can’t even begin to let him know how much I appreciate him.

“I love it, Drew. Really.” I tell him squeezing his hand so that he knows I’m being sincere.

Just then, we hear a groan echo from the back of the room.

“Mia! This box is freaking heavy! Where do you want it?" Hayden asks as he comes in stumbling slightly, struggling to manage a bulky box filled with my books.

I quickly let go of Drew and rush over to help Hayden, my hands grasping for the box.

“Hey, careful with those!" I warn as I help him set it down gently on the floor. “These are my babies!”

Hayden let’s out a breath and shakes his head at me. “Could you be any more of a nerd?”

I grin at him and hit him playfully.

“Mia seriously, how much stuff do you own!” Scott groans dramatically as he walks in with my pink purse slung awkwardly across his shoulder, dragging my suitcase behind him.

I fight the urge to laugh at the sight of him wearing one of my pink hats, dangling a pair of my heels in his other hand.

Hayden, never one to miss an opportunity, strolls over and adjusts the hat on Scott's head, teasing, "Aw, don't you look like a pretty little princess?"

Drew takes out his phone and snaps a quick photo while Hayden makes a peace sign.

Tom just dead pans as the flash goes off.

"Screw all of you.”

I chuckle and hurry over to help Scott. "Thanks, Scotty, I think that's about it," I say placing a kiss on his cheek.

“Gosh, I can’t believe you’re gonna be our new housemate.” Hayden says brushing his blonde hair out of his face as he pushes another of my boxed up stuff towards my new room.

To be honest, I can’t believe it either. I never imagined I’d get this taste of freedom before I turned eighteen but here I am.

"Alright, listen up!" Drew announces going to stand on the couch, his eyes narrow as he stares down Hayden and Scott. “I have some rules."

Scott and Hayden groaned in unison and I can tell Drew is about to go into overprotective big brother mode.

"Mia's officially living here and taking over my room, so all you idiots need to learn how to act with a girl living in the house now!" Drew yells.

I know me being here will be quite the adjustment considering how it’s been an all boys house until my arrival.

“Y’all need to learn how to keep it down. It’s Mia’s senior year and she needs to focus. Number two, Mia’s only seventeen so let’s keep it PG. I’m talking to you Hayden.“

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Hayden protests.

“It means no more one night stands,” Scott hits him and chuckles. “At least not here.”

Hayden looks dejected but before he can protest Drew continues; “and number 3, no leaving your drawers all over the freaking place!”

“I second that!” I speak raising my hands earnestly.

Scott attacks me in a hug, playfully messing up my hair.

“Don’t worry, M, we’ll be the perfect gentlemen for our little princess.” He said with a smile as I pushed him away.

"Yeah, you'll totally love it here, M. And I promise to leave the toilet seat down." Hayden chimed in holding up a hand in a scout’s honour gesture

I can’t help but smile.

Only days ago, I was living in my own personal hell with my dad but now my older brother had custody of me and I’m going to be living with him and his best friends who have known me long enough to be like brothers to me as well.

It feels good, like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I know I’ll be safe here. Way safer than I was at home anyway.

“Thank you guys.” I say, “really, it means a lot that you’re all taking me in.”

Drew gives me a sad smile. He knows what I’ve been through. How hard it was for me back home.

He walks over and gives me a hug, kissing my forehead.

“Don’t worry, M, you’re safe here.” He reassures me, his voice gentle and protective.

Scott, places a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Yeah, no one's touching you with us around.”

I feel tears prick at my eyes touched by their words. Before I can process the emotions swirling inside me, Hayden's booming voice cuts through the air. "Group hug!" he yells, and in an instant, his large frame envelops us in a massive bear hug.

"Hayden, can't breathe!" Drew groans, his voice muffled by Hayden's grip.

But Hayden just chuckles, his deep voice rumbling. "Just embrace it and feel the love, brother!"

I laugh, feeling a sense of belonging wash over me. In this moment, surrounded by by my brother and his friends, I realize I might have just found the family I've always wanted.

“Ouch!” I yelped as I dropped the tray I was trying to fish out of the oven onto the kitchen counter.Pain seared through my hand and I quickly rushed to hold it under running water, the burning sensation excruciating.“Mia? You okay?” Drew rushed over.“I’m fine.” I responded impatiently not being able to hide my frustration.I let out a huff shaking out my hand.A million things were wrong; our dad thinking it was even the least bit okay to call me, Kaden making me mad because he offered to ‘handle it’. Didn’t he realise just how risky that was? I don’t get why he didn’t understand I didn’t want anyone risking their lives for me.Drew walked over to the refrigerator and took out some ice cubes wrapping them in a kitchen towel before bringing it over to me.“Mia, the point of oven mitts is to avoid getting burnt.” He spoke as he handed the ice to me.I tried not to show how my frustration through my impatience. Was I angry? Yes.But did I want to take it out on anyone else, much less

I was seated on a bench.Kaden stood in front of me expectantly with his arms across his chest.I couldn’t look up at him. My eyes were focused on my hands as I fiddled with my nails trying to get myself together enough to tell the story.I let out a breath.“I already told you my father wasn’t a good guy. But I didn’t tell you what he did.“I knew Kaden was listening attentively.“He had always been violent. He got drunk and angry and hit my mum for as long as I could remember. Even when she got sick.” I spoke swallowing hard feeling like I was taking in something bitter. “When she died, he started taking all his anger out on Drew.”I sucked in a breath feeling like I could still hear all the yelling and fighting and Drew telling me to go to my room. “One day, Drew fought back and gave my dad a black eye.” I spoke. “The thing about bullies is that they hate it when you stand up for yourself. My dad was so angry, he started threatening to report Drew and get him arrested. The next day

“Are you ready?”“No.”“Perfect.”I was wearing a brand new work out set comprised of black leggings and a matching shirt courtesy of the gorgeous Kelly woman who looked at Kaden wistfully and shot me ugly looks as she had left.My hair was tied up in a high ponytail and I was freaking nervous.Kaden stood patiently beside me, his eyes standing on my stance as I wobbled unsteadily in the position he had set me in. His hands found my waist and my nerves shifted as I became more aware of his touch. He adjusted my position.“Feet shoulder width apart, Mia," he reminded me gently. I nodded, trying to focus but it was hard to do with how close he was.He moved his hands up my body and wrapped them around my own, guiding me through the motion of a jab. “Elbow in, fist tight.” instructed, his voice surprisingly calm and encouraging.I threw a weak punch in the air and Kaden chuckled as he stepped back. “I get that you’re upset but don’t take it out on me.” He spoke, his voice playful. I

Kaden showed up within fifteen minutes and I quickly ducked into his car not wanting the guards to see me.“Hi.” He furrowed his brows in worry when he his eyes focused on my face clearly seeing something was wrong. “Are you okay?” He asked. That one question seemed to make everything came crushing down. I clenched my hands into hard fists trying to keep my emotions at bay.I felt like if I spoke, I would burst into tears.“Mia.” He placed his hand on my cheek. “What the hell happened? Did someone hurt you?”I swallowed hard but it still felt like something was lodged in my throat.“Can we just… go somewhere?” I asked, my voice small.Kaden pulled back, concern still etched on his face but he nodded firmly and started the engine and we drove away from the school in silence.***A few minutes later, we pulled up to a nondescript gray building with a sign that read ‘The R centre’.I looked out the window curiously.Kaden walked around to open the door for me, holding out his hand.“What

I fell into my bed with a goofy smile plastered on my face.Today felt like a dream and the butterflies going crazy in my stomach made me feel like I was having my first crush all over again.I was on cloud nine and my heart was doing back flips in my chest.Every time I remembered Kaden’s lips on mine, where he had touched me, I felt sparks of electricity.I sunk down to the floor whipping out my phone swiftly going to my gallery to stare at the photo Silver had sent me of Kaden and I.I fought the urge to squeal. How was this real? My life had gone from feeling like a trainwreck to something right out of a movie.I pulled up Kaden’s name and typed a quick message.Me: I had a really nice time today. Thank you for tonight. His response came almost immediately.Kaden: Told you I could be exactly what you needed.Kaden: Goodnight, beautiful.I let out another little squeal as I grabbed Mr Washington squeezing him to my chest.I knew I needed to get ready for bed, I had school tomorrow

Kaden furrowed his brows as he looked up at me. His eyes searched mine with a look I couldn’t quite put my finger on. “I remember the first time I saw you, down in the club… you looked so beautiful, like an angel. So out of place and… I knew from that moment I had to know you.”I looked at the ground feeling heat creep up my neck.“I don’t think anyone has ever paid attention to me like that. Not even my ex boyfriend.”“Your ex boyfriend was a tool who didn’t deserve you.” He spoke bluntly. His hand tipped my chin up making his look up at him. “You deserve to be seen, Mia.”I stared into his warm brown eyes as tingles travelled through my body. As if instinctively,I leaned forward just as he did. But before our lips could even touch;“Uh, Mr Reyes?”Kaden paused, his eye’s tightening in annoyance.“What is it, Ron?” He growled not even turning to look at him.“Could I speak to you for a moment? It’s urgent.
