Kaelith’s POV

"Are we seriously taking up this path?" Marcus asked, his voice very irritating as he tried to block the path leading to the forest. "I observed the way you constantly sniffed around these few days like a crazy wolf. What exactly are you searching for?"

"Move aside, Marcus." I ordered, my voice coming out very cold and distant. "You shouldn't meddle because it's none of your business."

"That's not true because it's definitely my business." He shot back boldly. With his arms folded, his gaze directed at me, he started. "I noticed how you barely had any sleep. Recently, you skipped two important meetings with the council. Rumors has been spreading that their Alpha is losing it, all because if a ghost. If this has anything to do with her..."

"Don't try it." I warned sternly. My wolf growled the moment my voice turned cold. Only the mention of her name is enough to send a rush of different emotions to crush me down. And as of me, I lacked the patience to carefully untangle w

Marcus's POV He inhaled slowly, and I knew it would be very hard to get him to open up. “I cannot answer that question yet. At least give me some time.” I slammed a hand down on the table. “You called me here in secret for half-answers, for what gain exactly?” Rowan stepped closer, clearly not intimidated by my outburst. “Marcus… If we reveal everything too early, Kaelith will react with emotion, not strategy. That is what our enemy wants: an impulsive king.” My jaw worked, but I said nothing; I didn't want him to get the wrong narrative. Rowan continued, “We move carefully. Quietly. Hidden in the shadows until the right moment.” I turned away, running a hand through my hair. “I don’t have the luxury of patience. And neither does Kaelith.” Rowan’s voice softened. “This is why I asked at the beginning: why are you truly doing all this?” I froze, not having an answer for him. Rowan spoke again, eyes burning through me. “Guilt, Marcus. You’re trying to repay a debt, that's all

Kaelith's POVMy heart stumbled uncontrollably as Marcus stepped closer, voice raw.“Elara cared about you. More than anything else in this world. And she would never want you to die alone in grief because of her. She would want you to live.”I closed my eyes trying to take everything in. Pain sliced through me, too sharp, new, overwhelming.Marcus kept speaking, seeing that his voice was working.“That decree from the elders? It’s not just politics, Kaelith. It’s survival. The pack needs stability. A Luna and a future.”He swallowed hard, allowing the ones he had said to settle in.“And you… You need to stop punishing yourself."My eyes snapped open, and unknown anger surged in my chest. “You think this is punishment?”Marcus didn’t flinch; instead, he replied.“Yes.” I stepped back, shaking my head. “You don’t understand.”He lifted a brow. “Then explain it to me.”I clenched my jaw, I didn’t want to explain it. Didn’t want to dig open old wounds, but his stare was relentless, enoug

Kaelith’s POV “You’re obviously avoiding the council’s decree.” That was Marcus’s voice the very moment he entered my office, not even did he spare a second to knock, no hesitation before speaking, just a heavy accusation. I didn’t care to look up. I was standing by the window, staring into the forest like answers might decide to walk out of the trees and save me from this great mess. The storms in my chest hadn’t settled since yesterday, the elders pressing, the pack whispering, my wolf pacing like something was actually missing. Or someone important was missing. “I’m not avoiding anything,” I replied, my tone colder than I intended. Marcus scoffed, knowing truly well what I was doing. “Right, and I’m a fairy princess.” I turned then, finally meeting his gaze, just as he wanted. He looked rather exhausted. The kind of exhaustion that spoke of battles fought in silence, secrets carried alone, and worries sharper than claws. His jaw worked tirelessly also. “Alpha Kaelith, you

Unknown guard POV Marcus released me like a bag of sand and knelt to the floor like some kind of wolf detective. “Fresh scent, that's commendable. He left in a hurry.” My whole body shook, not out of shock, but confusion. “Can I go now? Please? I swear to the goddess, I want nothing to do with all of this. I was just doing my duty ” Marcus stood slowly, eyes locking onto mine with a weight that made my bones tremble. It was more than my small structure can carry, more than was needed. “Well, that's too late.” My stomach dropped on hearing that from him. “What do you mean by ‘too late’? I’m not....” “You’re in this now the veyy moment you got to know what they discussed.” “No. No, no, no...Marcus, I don’t want to die young.” He stepped closer, his presence intimidating, towering and hovering over me. He remained unmovable. From every line if his face, danger was carved. I don't know him to be like that, but the more jovial type, and the considerate one. I had no idea what was

Unknown Guard’s POV“You shouldn’t be here right now.”That was the first whisper I heard, too sharp like a blade, yet hiding a lot within.I froze behind the stone pillar, trying so hard not to expose myself, my breath held in my throat. Elder Varron’s voice was heard ringing through the dim hallway of the Silverfang council chamber, low, tense, and secretive.“Neither should you,” another voice replied, countering him, very smooth, confident, but yet poisonous. That was from Darius.I pressed closer to the wall so that I could get a clearer view of them, my pulse hammering so hard I feared they would hear it. I had only meant to patrol the east wing like every other night, nothing special. I was a nameless guard, nobody looked at me twice, nobody remembered my face, and that was exactly why this… this accident was dangerous, way too dangerous to be handled.Eavesdropping on the elders was treason and I mustn't be caught. On the other hand, eavesdropping on Darius? It was rather suic

Kaelith's POV Riona’s silence after that was answer enough answer that I needed. I paced around the table restlessly, every step heavy with suppressed fury that was threatening to come out. My wolf clawed beneath my skin, restless and at same time confused. They question us like we mean nothing. They doubt us like we don't know what we want for us. “They’ll regret it everything,” my wolf snarled through the bond, unable to calm down. I completely ignored the voice. Barely earger to hear him talk. Marcus spoke again, but carefully not to offend me. “Alpha Kaelith… what if they’re really right with their reasoning?” I stopped dead on my track. “You’re siding with them now, why exactly?” He shook his head quickly, trying to defend himself “No, not at all. But think about it very well. The pack needs hope that there will be a heir to replace you when you are gone. They’ve lost faith completely in you getting a heir. They need to see their Alpha healing, leading with heart again, a
