I turn around, taking a deep breath, and exhale. I start to walk away. I guess I’m making the cowardly choice, but I can’t stand to see him half-naked in front of her. His betrayal hurts so much. I feel pained and angry. I reach the door, my hand on the handle, and a sob escapes my mouth. But I can’t be weak—not in front of that bitch, Magdalena. I open the door and walk out.

“Katarina, wait, please!” Zane calls behind me just as I’m about to get into the car. I don’t know how to face him. I turn around, my eyes teary, feeling like if I say anything, the sobs will just spill out. I push forward, trying to open the car door, but he slams it shut, blocking my way.

“Katarina, please.”

I shake my head. “I can’t do this. Leave me alone, Zane,” I manage to say, my voice cracking as I suppress the tears.

“Katarina, just listen to me.”

Katarina“Do you need to take that?”He silences the phone and shakes his head. “No.”But the phone rings again incessantly.“It’s Ethan this time.” He looks torn, like he’s deciding between being Zane, my mate, and the responsibilities of the Grand Alpha.“Answer it,” I urge him.“What is it?” he says, answering the call. He stays on the phone for a few seconds before ending it. “Ethan says it’s urgent.”“Then you should go and handle it. I can take a cab home.”“No. I don’t want to leave you.”“You’re the Grand Alpha. They need you.”“Then come with me.”“That’s not a good idea. They don’t like me.”“I don’t bloody care,” he growls. “We’re together now. They’ll have to deal with that.”I bite my lip. “Zane, I’m not sure. They don’t trust me.”Zane has to understand, but telling him how Adam threatened me will only make things worse.“I don’t care about what they think,” he says, his eyes fierce. “You’re my Luna, Katarina. You belong by my side.”I guess there’s no stopping Zane once

KatarinaZane and I have made up. There’s no way I’m leaving my man for another woman, especially not that bitch, Magdalena. Besides, going back home is not a good idea.I think I’m happy. A week free of Magdalena has been awesome. Zane’s keeping his promise. Meanwhile, I’ve been getting nonstop calls from Francis. He’s pressuring me about our wedding. But how can I marry him when I’m in love with Zane? The worst part is that he has Dad’s support. I’ve been dragging my feet. I can’t even risk Zane finding out.My phone rings, vibrating on the table. It’s Dad. He’s calling to threaten me, I’m sure—either to kill Zane to prove my loyalty or to come back home. What if I’m just delaying the inevitable? Zane and I are sworn enemies. What if his wolves and my dad never let us be together? Will one of us eventually kill the other, or will we both die for love?“Your task is to group yourselves and understand the role each pack plays in the wolf zone. See you next class,” Professor Bennett sa

KatarinaI can’t hide the disappointment on my face when I see Roselyn.“Hi, Roselyn. Is Zane back yet?” I ask, unable to hide the anxiety creeping into my voice. She gives me a pitying look. “No, he’s not. You two had a fight yesterday, didn’t you?”I walk into the house and sink into the chair, my hands sliding from my face, running through my hair, and finally dropping to my sides.“Why can’t he just come home?”“Katty, Alpha Zane is a man with pride. Why not just apologize and ask him to come back home?”“What? How can I do that? He’s the one who’s wrong. He left home and didn’t come back the whole night. And now I find out that he slept at Magdalena’s house.”Roselyn doesn’t look surprised.“Why aren’t you surprised?”“Alpha Zane and Magdalena are thick as thieves. They understand each other. I mean, that’s where I expected him to go.”“So what? My mate fights with me and then runs off to another woman?”“Magdalena’s not just another woman, Katty. She’s his Beta, and they happen

Katarina“He… he is my—” I stammer, unable to answer Zane’s question. While, Francis just keeps calling incessantly. Zane glances at the screen for a second, then swipes to answer the call.“Zane,” I muffle as he picks up. “Give that back,” I say, trying to snatch the phone from him.“Don’t,” he warns sternly, and I freeze in fear.“Hello? Who is this?” Zane says. I have no idea what Francis says in response.“This is Alpha Zane, her partner. Why are you calling my woman?”He pauses, then looks at me.“The wedding?” he repeats, still staring.I can’t let Francis say more than that.“I want my phone back, Zane,” I say, reaching for it again.“What wedding are you talking about?” he asks, still on the line. “You’ll have to go through me to speak to Katarina. Answer my question.”Every time Zane and Francis are in the same space, it’s never peaceful. I have to get this under control before it spirals.“You don’t have my permission to stay on that call. Cut it, Zane!” I yell, and he looks

Katarina “Could you just lower your voice, Bex?” I plead quietly.“This isn’t fair,” Bex growls, storming off while still clinging to her silver star.“Bex… wait,” Cassandra calls after her.She walks back to us, angry.“She’s not even a wolf, Cassandra. I’m going to talk to my dad about this. This is unacceptable.”She rolls her eyes at me and storms off.Christ! Bex looks so furious. I bet she thinks I don’t deserve a gold rank—and she’s not wrong. I’ll have to talk to Zane.“Did you know about this?” Cassandra asks, her eyes narrowing at me.“I promise you, Cassie, I had absolutely no idea,” I insist. “And I don’t even want this.”“Don’t say that!” Cyprian interjects. “You deserve it.”“No, I don’t. Bex is right. This just feels like I slept my way to the top.”“Well, whatever it is, you’re at the top now, Katty. Congratulations!” Cassandra giggles, pulling me into a hug.I sigh, shaking my head. “I can’t even deal with this right now. There’s already so much on my plate.”“Like w

KatarinaZane paces around furiously, rubbing his forehead.“I swear, Zane, she’s disloyal to you. If you just check her phone, you’ll see that I’m not lying,” Magdalena persists.Zane doesn’t respond. He just continues to pace.Is he considering her words? Is he going to turn on me?I can’t even try to defend myself because she’s not wrong about everything.I cling to my phone tighter. He’s going to demand it—and it’s all Magdalena’s fault.“Even Adam can see right through her. Everyone can, except you. Zane, she’s not good for you. She only wants to bring you down.”“Shut your mouth, Magdalena. Get the hell out of my house.”What? I let out a breath of relief.“Alpha Zane, you can’t possibly throw me out. I’m your beta!”I don’t think he’s considering that right now.Zane shoves Magdalena in the stomach and she lands with a crash, but gets up quickly, breathing hard—full of anger, not at Zane, but at me.She looks at me like she’s about to lunge—but she won’t. KatarinaMy heart pounds. Stay calm, Katarina, she can hear your heartbeat. Don’t give her any more reasons to suspect you. Besides, she probably knows nothing about my plans. She wants me to slip up. But I’m not going to give her that satisfaction. There are only two people who know my secrets, and that’s Cyprian and Cassandra. And my friends will never betray me. They’ve risked themselves to help me. Plus, if Magdalena had anything concrete, she’d have told Zane, and he would definitely have confronted me for what I’ve done—love or not.“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I fold my arms, keeping a straight face. She won’t get any information out of me. I’m smarter than that.“Oh, I’ll remind you,” she sneers. “From trying to kill him so many times, to helping your useless father escape the fortress, to turning Zane against his own uncle. And now, you’ve come back after whatever scheme you’ve been running. I know you weren’t at the Academy’s road trip—you went back to your fa

Katarina I feel so nervous. They’re all staring at me like I’m some kind of criminal, as if I’ve committed the most heinous of crimes. My breathing is way too fast. I can’t seem to calm myself down.“Tell us, Katarina. What have you been doing at Wolf Zone?” Jeremy demands, and they all land me cold stares.No. I can’t take this. My chest tightens as my breaths grow shallow. I look around frantically, my heart pounding in my ears. I spot my opening—a small chance to escape. I glance back at the door. Some hunters are standing there, blocking my way out. There’s no way I can leave through there.I don’t spend time thinking about it. I take my best shot. I dash up the stairs toward my room.“You can’t run forever, Katarina! There’s no way out! You hear me? No way out!” Francis’ voice echoes up the stairs as I slam the door behind me. I collapse to the floor. My body trembles, and I try to steady my breathing and calm myself down. The whole faction thinks I’ve betrayed them. Because I s
