Kaelen's POV

The armored Maybach's tyres made a humming sound on the wet asphalt of Princes Highway, producing a steady and rhythmic purr which failed to ease the tense, clutching sensation in my chest.

The first faint light of dawn was appearing over the Victorian countryside, pouring through the thick, low-lying rain clouds a sickly yellow. The rain hit the tinted bulletproof glass in sharp and irregular bursts.

Next to me in the backseat, my chief cybersecurity officer Devlin had a heavy workstation laptop strapped over his thighs.

The glow from the three small screens coloured his face in electric blue and green.

His fingers were rapidly pressing keys on a split mechanical keyboard, producing a frantic and accurate rhythm which had continued without interruption since we had passed the Melbourne city limits.

"Talk to me, Devlin," I said, my voice low and dark. I didn't look at him; my eyes remained fixed on the road ahead where the trees were becoming dark green streaks.

"This isn't just a relay, Mr. Vance," Devlin murmured, his voice showing both professional admiration and weariness. "The people who constructed this network are ghosts. A brilliant and terrifying ghost."

I turned my head slowly, my eyes narrowing and focusing. "Explain."

Devlin shifted his glasses and turned the workstation so I could see the complex cascade of diagnostic data.

"Aegis didn't merely make use of proxy servers when it carried out those block purchases yesterday; they set up a dynamic routing loop which involved bouncing the trade execution orders through encrypted satellite nodes in Zurich, Tokyo, and Frankfurt at the same time."

“We've heard about the offshore proxies,” I said, my patience wearing thin. It was Marcus who said you traced the physical ping to Port Campbell.

"We did, but that's where it becomes insane," Devlin said, pointing his finger at a red line trace on his screen. "The only reason we were able to catch the physical tail was because of a single, microsecond anomaly, a digital breadcrumb left behind in the data packet header."

He pressed a key, isolating a sequence of raw hexadecimal code.

"Look at the timestamp header on the execution token," Devlin continued, his voice falling to a whisper. "The person who wrote this algorithm added an automated self-clearing procedure which, as soon as a trade is executed, causes the server to erase its own logs, empty its cache, and then send the next order via a totally different IP address, forming an insurmountable barrier except for one thing.”

“The breadcrumb," I said, leaning closer, my heart pounding heavily against my ribs.

"When it came to writing the original script," Devlin said, looking up at me with his eyes wide behind his lenses, "they didn't start from scratch; instead, they built Aegis on top of a core framework, that is, an architecture designed for bypassing heavy institutional firewalls without setting off security sweeps."

My blood turned to e air in the cabin suddenly felt thin and suffocating.

I whispered about " The Vance Energy core framework,” I whispered.

"Yes, sir," Devlin affirmed, swallowing hard. It is a modified version of the clean-grid encryption engine which you designed five years ago. The same architecture that was stolen in the Vance Energy leak."

I leaned back against the headrest and closed my eyes as a sudden and violent wave of memory overwhelmed me.

Five years ago, during the late hours in my private office on the penthouse floor, it was exactly as it is now, with the rain beating on the windows.

I recalled sitting at my desk, covered with several replicated Mathematica formulas, as Kyriee sat in a large chair beside me, remembered her giving me tea, her soft fingers gently rubbing the tense muscles of my shoulders, and her warm breath coming close to my ear as she whispered, "Rest, Kaelen. It will still be here in the morning."

I used to think she was my sanctuary and that her gentleness was genuine.

Throughout all this, while her gentle hands were resting on my shoulders, she was memorizing the architecture and making mental notes of the encryption keys, holding herself ready to destroy my world at the exact moment when it was time to do so.

A sharp, bitter anger burst in my chest, so hot and keen it caused the remaining pain of being betrayed to disappear.

"She never sold it," I whispered, my voice amazingly calm, and opened my eyes to look out at the highway drenched in rain.

"Sir?" Devlin asked, confused.

“My mum told the board Valkyrie had sold the algorithms to our competitors as a cash payment,” I said, my jaw tightening into a rigid line.

“My uncle claimed she was a mercenary working for an offshore cartel, but she didn't sell them; she kept them. She took my own code, went into hiding in a fishing village, and for four years turned my work into a weapon to destroy me.”

"Mr. Vance," Devlin said carefully, tapping his screen once more.

"There's another thing. Something about the bandwidth usage on that Port Campbell server doesn't make sense."

I turned back to him. "What is it?"

"A setup like Aegis running real-time market arbitrage while maintaining a multi-node proxy shield requires massive processing power and a continuous, high-speed data stream," Devlin explained, pointing to a spiking blue graph.

“A standard coastal line isn't capable of providing this, so the person operating the terminal had connected the local server directly to an auxiliary power grid."

He focused on the satellite image of the Port Campbell property, which was a high-resolution infrared thermal scan displaying the heat signatures of the cabin.

“Sir, the amount of power being drawn is not even,” Devlin said, his forehead creasing.

“The server in the attic is taking up about forty percent of the power draw, but there's also a second thermal signature at high voltage coming from the ground floor. It is continuous and uninterrupted, and the equipment is operating on a heavy backup generator."

I stared at the infrared heat map and saw a bright red area pulsing steadily in the small room at the back of the cabin.

"Is it security equipment?” I asked, "Signal jammers?"

"No, sir," Devlin replied as he retrieved a database of medical equipment linked to local utility permits.

"The power draw signature corresponds to a specialized, medical-grade hypothermia unit and a continuous-flow oxygen concentrator."

My heart stopped beating.

As rain hit the car windows with great force, a vast, magnificent stretch of the Ocean suddenly appeared through the mist. The sign for Port Campbell sped past in a blur.

"Sir!" Devlin yelled at once, rushing his fingers over the keys as a loud alarm sounded from the laptop speakers.

"The Port Campbell terminal has just had a hard-system wipe carried out! A person at the site is destroying the primary drives!"

"Where is the security team?" I demanded, leaning over the console, and my voice resounded like thunder inside the car.

"They're there at the front gate, sir, but wait, the signal!" Devlin gasped, looking at the screen with pure horror.

"The Aegis proxy didn't simply crash; it has launched a counter-payload! It's currently routing through our own car's satellite receiver!"

Before I could react, the central dashboard screens of the Maybach flickered violently, turned crimson, and then stopped working.

A single line of crisp, silver text flashed on the dashboard display:

‘Turn back, Kaelen. If you open that gate, you will destroy us both.’

Kaelen's POV The clock on the mantelpiece chimed 3:14 AM.I was sitting in the dark behind the desk in my penthouse. Below, the city formed a grid of indistinct yellow lights, sleeping peacefully and completely unaware of the storm that had ripped through my life.I hadn't slept for three days, and each time I shut my eyes I saw the falling stock prices, the Chapter 11 filings, and the angry faces of the Vance Global board members demanding I be dismissed.I saw her.I saw Valkyrie standing on the damp porch of the coastal cottage in Port Campbell, her dark hair blowing in the wind and her hand holding onto her cardigan over her chest. And above all else... I saw the child.A muscle in my jaw jumped as I reached down, opened the top right drawer of my desk, and took out a small box with a velvet lining made of mahogany. I opened the lid with my thumb. In there was her wedding ring, a thin and delicate circle of polished platinum, simple and unpretentious, just as she had been when I

Between us on the kitchen counter was Hamish’s encrypted satellite phone, the dark screen reflecting the morning light.“He's outside, Valkyrie. Kaelen. He is waiting at the gate.”I gripped the handle of the small folding knife in my cardigan pocket, my heart beating so hard against my ribs that it made my shoulders shake.I stared at his eyes, hoping to discover the stranger who had been behind the kind mask he had worn for four long years."I've been betrayed," I whispered, my voice becoming rough and painful. He neither drew a weapon nor reached for his phone; instead, he sighed softly and heavily, a deep, exhausted sadness that st

Kaelen's POV The air in the executive boardroom on the 50th floor was thick with sweat and panic.Inside, fifteen board members sat around the table, their faces appearing pale under the blue light of the wall-mounted monitors."Twelve percent, Kaelen!" my uncle Arthur shouted, slamming both hands down on the table. A thin line of sweat shone on his forehead under the light. "Twenty-four separate shell accounts in Cayman and Zurich have taken twelve percent of the controlling voting stock of Vance Global in less than seventy-two hours! Do you have any idea what that means?"I didn't reply as I sat with my fingers intertwined over a closed leather folder, looking at the central screen.TARGET ENTITY: AEGIS CAPITALTOTAL SHARES ACQUIRED: 12.1% VOTING EQUITYORIGIN PORT: ENCRYPTED OFFSHORE ROUTER"That means we're being raided," stammered another board member, the senior director Henderson, as he fumbled with his tie. Valkyrie's POV The rain had ceased, but the fog drifting from the ocean was so dense.I stood at the kitchen window with a steaming mug of black coffee, my eyes on the driveway. All my instincts were urging me to get Lachlan and Chloe into the Ford Falcon and disappear further along the coast. The email warning the live GPS indicating that a vehicle was approaching Port Campbell was still burning behind my eyelids like a brand."Val?"The silence in the cabin was broken by a soft, raspy voice.I turned instantly, getting rid of the panic from my face. My sister was standing on the archway of the sunroom. Chloe looked delicate and pale, as if the morning light seemed to pass through her. Though she was in her early twenties, she looked older than a teenager. "You're up early, sweetheart," I said, setting down my coffee and hurrying over to her side. I slipped my arm around her waist, supporting her before her knees gave way.“I couldn't sleep,” she said, her breath coming in short
