Azrael's POV

Most of the palace was awake now because of the intrusion. Footsteps echoed in the corridors, doors opened, closed. Voices dropped when I passed and rose again when I was gone.

Someone had attacked Briar.

The thought stayed with me, thrumming like a pulse I couldn’t silence.

I stood beside her bed, hands clasped behind my back, the pressure of my own grip grounding me. My jaw was locked so tight it ached. The muscle beneath my eye kept twitching, betraying what the rest of me refused to show.

The healer worked quietly. She checked Briar’s pulse, her breathing, the faint rise of her chest. I watched without blinking, my gaze following every shift of her hand, every sound of cloth or metal.

My lungs burned from holding the breath I hadn’t realized I was keeping.

I forced my fingers to stay still behind my back. The urge to lash out pressed against my ribs like a living thing. It wanted out.

But I didn’t move.

I just stood there. Watching. Breathing through clenched teeth.

Azrael's POVI dreamed of things I had long convinced myself did not exist. Things that were impossible. A life that stretched forward without an end. Castles and halls filled with warmth instead of silence. Briar was there with me, walking with me, laughing in a way that felt real and permanent. Just her, and the certainty that she would still be there tomorrow, and the day after that, and centuries beyond that. So when I opened my eyes, I wasn't surprised to see her beside me, sleeping so peacefully. She lay on her side, facing me, her head close to my chest, one arm resting across my torso as though it had always belonged there. Her presence fit so naturally into the space. I didn’t remember hearing her enter. I didn’t remember the sound of the door, or the weight of the mattress shifting when she lay down beside me. But from how my body felt rested, and how I couldn't even remember having any night terrors, I knew she must have been here since last night.I have always been an

Briar's POV It had been days since the competition began, and we had already gone past two stages. Roxie kept up her act flawlessly, smiling, answering questions, and parading her lies like they were truth.Every time I watched her, my chest tightened, the unfairness gnawing at me. No one seemed to notice that her “inspiration” was stolen.Azrael still hadn’t come around. I barely saw him anymore, and I was getting worried about how our relationship, which had already been fragile, was fading faster than I could imagine. He barely looked at me when we crossed paths in the palace halls. Even in the rare moments when he was present, he gave me nothing more than the bare minimum necessary to acknowledge my existence. Meals were now eaten separately. Now the palace had begun to notice. I could hear whispers everywhere I went. Servants, guards. It wasn't good.In the night, sleep refused to come at all.I lay in my bed staring at the ceiling, the faint rhythm of the palace settling arou

Briar's POV At first, I genuinely thought Azrael was joking.I was still standing there when the knock came. Two maids entered, heads bowed, eyes carefully avoiding mine. They went straight to the closet. One of them reached for my clothes. The other began gathering my personal items from the dresser. “What are you doing?” I asked, my voice sounding wrong even to my own ears.“His Majesty has given instructions for us to move your things to your chamber,” one of them replied quietly. That was when it sank in.He really meant it.I watched them carry my clothes, all of my belongings that were here, out of the room Azrael and I had shared. When they were done, the room looked stripped, like I had never belonged there at all. That night, for the first time since forever, we did not sleep on the same bed.And from that day on, Azrael made himself completely scarce. He did not join me for meals. Anytime I tried to approach him to talk, he'd disappear before I could even get to him.Until

Aaron's POV Roxie did not stop talking from the moment we left the palace grounds until we arrived home.“The queen is so graceful,” she said for the third time as I sat on the bed. “Did you hear the way she complimented me when she tasted the tea? That is elegance. Real elegance.”I nodded once, because it took less effort than speaking. My body felt wrong, and every slight movement sent a dull ache up my spine, settling hard behind my ribs and sitting there.Roxie continued, pacing around the room, her words speeding up as she sank deeper into her fantasy.“If I win this, I would become her personal coffee maker. Do you know what that means? Access. Influence. People listen to you when you are close to the queen.” “Mmm,” I murmured. She did not notice my lack of enthusiasm. She rarely did when she was in this state.“I could become the queen’s friend and be invited to private gatherings,” she went on, her excitement building on itself. “I could become one of the most influential

  • FAKE BRIDE OF THE ALPHA KING    53: She Stole Everything

Briar's POV I couldn’t believe this act of pure wickedness. Roxie had the nerve, the sheer audacity, to take what was mine, my recipe, and present it as her own. Every detail, every painstaking measurement I had perfected, claimed by someone else like it meant nothing. My chest felt tight, my hands balled into fists at my sides.By the time I reached our room, my jaw ached from holding it closed for so long. The door swung shut behind me, and the words poured out.“Can you imagine what Roxie did?” I said, my voice raw with frustration. “Do you know the audacity it takes to stand in front of people and lie like that?”Azrael was near the window, his back partially turned to me, one hand braced against the frame, his body tense but still. He didn’t turn immediately, and that alone irritated me further.“She stole my recipe,” I said, pacing the length of the room, my hands clenching and unclenching at my sides. “She wasn’t inspired by it, or even said she improved it. She stole it. Ev

  • FAKE BRIDE OF THE ALPHA KING    53: The Beginning of the Competition

Briar's POV The first round of the royal tea and coffee competition began and the shortlisted candidates had already started presenting their recipes to the queen.Me.One by one, the candidates stepped forward when called, carrying their carefully prepared beverages. The flavors settled on my tongue, noticing the balance, and the subtle notes that revealed each candidate’s skill.I sat hidden behind three rows of curtains, thick enough to block me entirely from the contestants and the audience beyond them. I could make out shapes and faint movements through the fabric, their gestures and all, but they could not see me at all.Communication with the contestants was only through my aide. I whispered my impressions quietly to her, and she repeated them clearly to the candidates.I leaned slightly toward my aide beside me.“Announce the next contestant,” I murmured.“Yes, Your Majesty,” she replied immediately, her posture straightening. She raised her voice, carrying my words into the
